“Hey,” I said, pushing up on his chest to look at him. The room was dark, but enough light was coming through the blinds to make out his features. “You didn’t wake me up. I woke up on my own and came looking for you.”

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there. I should have told you.”

“I forgive you. You’re actually pretty cuddly, Bossman.”

“You’re the only woman I’ve ever wanted to hold after sex,” he said, his voice low and hesitant, as if the admission was something he was uncomfortable sharing.

“Do you think it’s my pickleball skills that make me special?” I said, my voice all tease.

“Or the way you just rode me like a fucking jockey at the Kentucky Derby.”

I laughed. “Let’s go back to sleep, okay?”

“If I do anything—” He paused. “Or if I shout and it scares you, I want you to leave.”

“You don’t scare me, Maddox.” I wrapped my arms around his chest and fell back asleep.

I wasn’t scared that Maddox would have a nightmare.

I was only scared that he’d most likely break my heart.

When I wokeup the following morning, I looked around when I realized Georgia was gone. I surged to my feet, worried that I’d done something to frighten her.

Jesus. I’d fucked up inviting her here. What was I thinking?

I wasn’t.

I wanted her with me, and I went for it.

And now she knew about the nightmares.

Outside of Wyle, she was the only one.

I hurried down the hallway, and the smell of bacon flooded my senses. I looked in my bedroom, and she wasn’t there, so I pulled on a pair of joggers and my Harvard hoodie and made my way out to the kitchen.

I’d given Hilda the week off for the holidays, not that she ever cooked when she was here.

“My Sharona” played through the speaker on the counter, but the volume was low. Obviously, she didn’t want to wake me. She had her back to me, but I could see that she was wearing my black sweater that draped over her petite frame and ended at her mid-thigh. She wore my grandfather’s cowboy hat, and she was swaying her hips to the music as she cracked an egg in the pan.

So fucking sexy.

I just took a minute to enjoy the view before I spoke. “What are we doing in here?”

She jumped, dropped the egg on the floor, and let out a little squeal.

I chuckled and walked closer, reaching for some paper towels and wiping up the mess as she watched me.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.”

Once I tossed the raw egg in the garbage, she reached for the cleaner and wiped up the remnants of the egg on the floor to make sure it was gone. She placed her hands on her hips and smiled up at me.

“All that good lovin’ made me hungry. I hope it’s okay that I made us breakfast.”

“Of course it is.” I shoved my hands into the pockets of my joggers to keep from reaching for her.
