I laugh, too. “It’s okay. It’s funnynow. It was less humorous that day, though.”

“He thought you’d buy that?”

“Not only did he think I might be dumb enough to believe that, then he tried to pivot things into a three-way.”

Rowan’s pretty blue eyes bulged. “Hewhat?”

I sip my wine and nod. “I guess he thought he could try to salvage things that way or something. I don’t know. Anyway, after that debacle came the calls to many, many lawyers. Thank you for the recommendation of Elaine Pillsbury. She was exactly what I needed.”

“Of course.”

“And after that, I moved into my apartment and focused on work. I’ve been going at it hardcore for a year now, and it’s a struggle, but I love my job.”

“Why not stay in the house?”

“Where I found Mark getting his testicle exam? No, thank you.”

He snorts a laugh, trying to stifle it. “Shit, I am so sorry about that.”

Autumn shrugs. “As much as I had wanted kids, I am really glad we never had them. I couldn’t imagine going through a divorce with them involved.”

“Kids are great, but theydocomplicate things.”

“Please tell me all about them, because I do not get to see those rugrats nearly often enough and talking about my divorce is depressing.”

“We can’t have that. Tonight is supposed to be fun. Speaking of fun, Ellie’s two boyfriends have decided they are each other’s boyfriends, too, so…that’s different.”

Autumn giggles. “Kids do not quite grasp the whole relationship thing. Or who knows? Maybe they’re the ones who have it right, and we’re the ones who are wrong.”

I laugh. “I guess that could be the case, but since they’re all six, I’m guessing it’s the former. Meanwhile, Jonah is completely addicted to his iPad.”

“I don’t really know how the whole screen time thing works for kids. I know it’s a hot topic right now.”

“Honestly, I don’t know how it’s supposed to work, either. But I try to remember to take it from him at night, because he hasn’t developed his ability to limit himself just yet. He keeps trying to sneak it under his blanket, so thankfully, he’s not that sneaky.”

“He’s not sneakyyet. That one is going to be trouble. I’m telling you, it’s not Ellie. She’s a good kid.”

“Are you saying Jonah is a bad kid?”

She giggles again. “Not at all. I’m saying he’ll be trouble, and by trouble, I mean, he’s going to do something big. Like, revolutionize social media, or figure out some way to make microchips out of recycled plastic. I don’t know, something big.”

“And how will that be trouble?”

“Because he will sell it to the highest bidder and retire at fourteen, making the rest of us feel like chumps for working a normal job.”

I laugh. “Thatdoessound like trouble. He is a genius with that thing—I wouldn’t put it past him to do both things. And even though Ellie’s romantic life is going without a hitch, her friend life is not.”

“No?”

“Her best friend moved away.”

Autumn clutches her chest in sympathy. “Oh, poor girl. I know what that’s like. When you lose your best friend, nothing feels right.”

I walked into a minefield with that one.Shit. “Apologies. I know you and Mark were close. I didn’t mean to bring him up again—
