Including Rowan. And his date.

So when I come out of the ladies’ room to find him waiting for me in the hallway, I am in no mood.

He handsomely widens his eyes. Which I didn’t know a man could do. “I wanted to check in with you. You haven’t said a word to me all day.”

“You looked busy.”

“I’m in the wedding party—

“Right. Busy. So am I.” I try to breeze past him, but he leans on the wall behind me, cutting me off.

“Autumn, talk to me. Why have you been blowing me off?”

“Busy.”

He huffs and takes my wrist, dragging me to his office. He closes the door behind us. “Talk to me.”

But I can’t. He has a date, and I have nothing he wants to hear. “I’m working, Rowan.”

“You’re working for my family. If they ask, I’ll tell them I was consulting with you for something.”

“I’m just a consultant now? The hired help?”

He sighs. “Don’t do this.”

“Don’t you need to get back to your date?”

“Ally is…she—is that what this is about? Autumn, are you jealous of Ally?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” I tell him flatly. “Why would I be jealous of her?”

He tips his head to the side, asking if I was serious.

“Oh, because she has you?” I laugh unconvincingly. “Don’t flatter yourself, Rowan.”

“I thought…” he pauses, staring at me. “I thought this was supposed to be a physical thing. Am I wrong—

“That’s all it ever was.”

He clenches his jaw, and his eyes narrow. “Good. Glad we’re clear about that.”

“Crystal clear. Now, can I go, Boss?”

He rolls his eyes. “Don’t be like that.”

“Be like what? Remember, I’m just a consultant.”

“Autumn, come on. Stop it.”

“Whatever you say, Boss.”

His eye roll becomes a glare. “Seriously? I didn’t mean anything by that, and you know it. Why are you picking a fight?”

“Maybe it’s just nice to see you display an emotion every once in a while.”

“What are you talking about?”

“What’s it like, not feeling anything for anyone else?”
