“Nobody saw it?”

“Fuck no.”

“Can I have it back?”

“No,” he said in finality.

“Why?”

He ignored me and opened the door. “Get in the car.”

“Wait for me. Get in the car,” I mimicked his voice, going heavy on the accent. Then I screeched when he smacked me on the behind. I scowled at him.

“Still need lessons in manners.”

“You know, you’re a real pain in the ass.” I rubbed the back pocket of my high-waisted denim shorts, still smarting over the sting. “Literally.”

“You’re a pain in my dick, but we can’t always get what we want. Now get in the car.”

Sliding into the seat, I eyed him in disbelief because some of the words that fell out of his mouth were mindboggling. I thought about how hard he was in the shower and how his demeanor changed after giving me the best orgasm of my life.

He slipped behind the wheel and laid a hand on my seat. “Did you keep my football or try to give that away, too?”

“It’s in my bag.”

“Good. That’s a fucking collector’s item.”

Then why did he give it to me? When he sped out of the parking lot, I assumed he would take me back to my apartment. However, he went in the opposite direction. “Where are we going?”

“Why? Are you worried I’m kidnapping you?” He glanced down at my bare thigh before raising his eyes.

“I thought you were taking me home.”

“You thought wrong.”

He pulled into a crowded parking lot at a restaurant with the wordDuffy’sflashing in red high above the building. “Isn’t this where Theo works?” I remembered Theodora mentioning it in passing, but I knew she was off today.

“Yes.” One word.

Having a conversation with him was about as fruitful as planting seeds in Antarctica. “Thanks for the riveting talk, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to go home.”

“No.” He whipped into a spot by the door for take-out orders only.

“Why?”

“I’m hungry, and you need to eat, too.”

“Did you order takeout?”

“No.” His words were short and clipped and, most of all, grating on my nerves. He was already out of the car and moving around to my side as I mulled over why we were here together. He seemed like he’d rather be anywhere else but here. Or maybe he’d prefer to be here without me, so why in the hell did he insist I be here with him?

The door opened, and he loomed over me. “Out.”

I ground my teeth in annoyance. “Could you stop ordering me around?”

“No.” This time, his lips wavered. He helped me out as if I couldn’t do it myself.

“I hope your car gets towed for parking illegally.”
