He frowned. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘Nothing,’ she said quickly.

‘It doesn’t seem like nothing to me.’

Matt didn’t like Hannah holding anything back from him. Not again. Not any more. At the door he turned back towards her, determined to get an answer.

He watched her eyes linger on the bed before meeting his. ‘Really, it doesn’t matter.’

It mattered a great deal to him. He saw nothing wrong with the room. She would be comfortable in here and he was close by in his own room. He was providing a safe space. If she yelled out for him, he would be here in an instant.

But you wouldn’t be here with her.

Could that be what bothered her—their separate rooms? After all, he was the one who said they would be a family if the baby was his. But he didn’t know that yet. He needed a moment to himself to think about everything.

It didn’t help that being around Hannah made his blood sing. Yet she had been the one to pull away. He’d been so close to kissing her in the hotel, he could almost taste her lips. As far as he could see, she wasn’t ready to be with him, and he still didn’t know what her game was, but this infuriating attraction would not abate.

He stalked towards her and pulled her off the bed. ‘Hannah, I’m giving you your space because I think you need it right now. We both do. But if I thought for one second you wanted to be in my bed, if I knew I could trust you, that’s exactly where we’d be.’ It pained him to admit it.

‘You don’t have to say that, Matt.’

Was she blind? Did she not understand how much he wanted her? How buckling her in the car, being so close to her body that he knew so well, had nearly undone him? She looked away, making him think maybe she did see, but it made little difference. Grasping her chin, he turned her face, forcing her to look at him.

She tried to push away from him. ‘I’m not the same person you knew in Melbourne. I’ve changed.’

‘What are you saying?’ he asked, temper fraying.

‘I know you’ve been with other women since me. I don’t even know if you’re seeing someone now.’

And that was when the tether snapped. ‘Do you think I would be unfaithful?’ Did she see him the same way his father had—a partying playboy? It stung that she would think so.

‘It’s just—’

‘It’s just nothing, Hannah. I am not seeing anyone.’ The growl of his voice was ringing in his own ears. ‘I’m not in the habit of seeking the company of several lovers. I’m not the one who could be lying.’

‘I didn’t mean... I just know you’ve been on dates.’

‘Yes, I’ve been on dates, but I haven’t been with anyone since you.’ He could see the shock of that revelation on her face. ‘I meant what I said. We will be a family.’

Her eyes widened as he stepped closer to her. She retreated until her back hit the wall and his face was directly in front of hers. ‘When I put that ring on your finger, I will be announcing to the world that we are together.’

He saw her lips form his name; nothing but breath escaped. Those lips that haunted him—those lips, those eyes and that voice. He’d tried to forget her. The dates he’d taken to events had been poor stand-ins. He didn’t just want a pretty face, he longed for the conversations he’d had with Hannah, her teasing sass.

And the fact that he thought she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen since the moment his eyes had landed on her in the club had never once changed. Hannah had done something to him seven months ago. He didn’t want fake smiles and inane small talk. He didn’t want lust-filled stares—not any more. He was tired of it. If only he could trust her.

Matt crowded her, palms resting flat against the wall beside her head. ‘Do you want me to tell you how many times I’ve dreamed of you? How often I’ve thought of you? Your lips...’

He leaned down, his breath skimming over her lips. ‘Your taste.’ He ran his nose along her jaw, listening to how her breathing increased. ‘Would you like to know how badly I want to explore your body? Sink my fingers into you?’ His mouth was at her ear. ‘Because I want to, Hannah.’

She let out a quiet moan and he felt himself harden. ‘I want to learn every new curve.’ One of his hands came off the wall and trailed over her side, making her shiver. ‘I want to hear you call my name when you come for me. Again.’ He ran his fingers over her hands which were rigidly splayed against the wall. Her body arched towards him.

Matt pulled away, keeping his face a breath in front of hers, and she finally opened her eyes to look into his. Christ, he wanted her, but now was not the time. Not when she had admitted to being afraid to tell him about the pregnancy. When she pulled away from him. When he was still unsure if she was lying to him.

‘But it won’t happen.’ Matt tore himself away. His own breathing had turned ragged, and he knew he had to leave her alone for the rest of the day just so that he could get back some semblance of control.

‘Get some rest.’ With purposeful strides he entered his own room and shut the door. Despite how cool his apartment was, his skin was overheated. He was painfully aroused and decided a cold shower would be the best thing for him.
