She watched Matt pull away from her. Their bodies came to a stop, the music dying away. His gaze was intense, as if he was seeing into the depths of her. He had looked at her like that before on a dance floor full of people. And, just like then, she wanted so badly to be kissed by him.

He leaned in, closing the distance between their lips but not all the way, waiting for her to meet him, she realised. To tell him this was what she wanted. So she did. The moment their lips met, a sob rose from her and Matt swallowed the sound. This is what she had wanted, had longed for for seven months—Matt’s taste, smell and heat.

In Melbourne Matt had taken his time. His lips had been a sweet seduction in that pulsing club. This kiss was raw, full of craving and power, but restrained and tense. It was wild and begging to be unleashed but full of feeling and need. To some tenderness was gentle, to others tenderness was glimpsing a hidden self. And Hannah saw the self in Matt that wanted her desperately. In this most beautiful of surroundings, with such melodious notes wrapping around them, Matt was urgent. She could feel the rise and fall of his chest. This kiss was a stormy sea and they were drowning in it.

This was a different dance, a different city. But it was the same voltaic chemistry between the same people who had become so different. In this moment, they knew each other.

With white-hot need taking hold of her, Hannah pulled away from his lips, a quiet giggle escaping her when she noticed the smudge of her lipstick on his mouth. Reaching up to wipe it away, she heard a growl rip from his throat as his eyes, darkened like a forest in the fading light, landed on the matching smear she was sure was on her mouth.

‘You have—’

But her words were cut off by his lips crashing down on hers, plundering her mouth with another fierce kiss that stole all the breath from her lungs.

‘Let’s go home,’ she said against his lips.

CHAPTER TWELVE

LATER, HANNAH WOULD have no memory of the haste in which they left. Of Matt handing the valet ticket over or the fact that the car had been brought round faster than any other.

Now, though, they found themselves rushing through the streets. Matt’s eyes were glued to the road while the car rocketed along without complaint. Anticipation had Hannah in a firm embrace. Her breath hadn’t slowed from the moment Matt had kissed her. Her skin tingled and all she could think about was how good it would be to feel Matt’s hands on her.

She looked over at him at the same time he turned to her. Their gazes locked for a beat and laughter bubbled out of them both. It felt as if they were teenagers, eager for all these new sensations. Except it wasn’t really new to them. It was knowing exactly what it felt like to be with each other that made them so impatient now to have the walls come down between them.

It wasn’t long before Matt helped Hannah out of the car and laced their fingers together. With his hand firmly holding hers, he took her up to the penthouse, not once letting go until she was in his bedroom with him.

All Hannah could think about was Matt. Her body was sparking from the feeling of her hand in his. She hadn’t been into his room since she’d arrived. Somehow that would have felt like an invasion of privacy. As if maybe she wouldn’t be welcome in it. Now she didn’t bother looking around. She didn’t see it; it didn’t matter. Not when Matt was raising her fingers to his lips, when he was drawing one into his mouth, kissing the side of it, licking the space between them. Every sensation went straight to the point between her thighs.

And, when he gently dropped her hand to her side, he closed the distance between them and she closed her eyes just as he brushed his lips against hers, a light touch and then he’d pull away. Again and again, teasing her, lighting her body up, making her want him until she could cry. Then he took her lips in his, sliding his tongue along hers, and she shivered. She parted her lips for him, his tongue caressed hers and her entire body went up in flame. She felt him press her body against his, making her moan into his mouth.

‘God, Hannah, I missed you.’

His rough voice scraped against her nerve endings, and when he pulled away she said, ‘I want you.’

He spun her round, holding her back against his chest. His body was hard, unyielding against hers. Shuddering when Matt moved her hair aside, Hannah sighed as he pressed open-mouthed kisses to her nape, then shoulder. The purr of her zipper unfastening filled the silent room as Matt eased it down, peppering kisses down her back as he went. The dress slid off her body, landing in a pool at her feet. Her skin pebbled from the sudden cool air.

She heard the rustle of his clothes as he stood up. The sound of his voice at her ear.

‘You’re so beautiful, Hannah.’

Warm fingers traced her back and undid the clasps of her bra, but Hannah didn’t let it fall. His hands were on her shoulders now, trying to turn her round, but a sudden panic was gripping her. The body he’d known was gone. Of course he’d seen that, but it was one thing to be seen with your clothes on, a whole other thing to be naked. He had been so caring but that had been for his child, not her.

Matt walked round her and tilted her chin up to look at her. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘Nothing,’ she lied. Insecurities she didn’t know how to kill bubbled to the surface.

‘Do you want to stop?’

No, she didn’t. She craved the release only Matt could give her. Fear that he would be turned off by her was battling that need.

She leaned into his hand when it cupped her cheek, his fingers burying in her hair.

‘No,’ Hannah breathed.

‘Then tell me what’s wrong.’

Hannah swallowed hard. ‘I’m scared.’

‘Of me?’ He frowned.
