‘Don’t hide anything from me tonight,’ he begged her.

‘I won’t.’

His body tensed like it never had before when Hannah lowered herself slowly onto him but she didn’t move.

‘Please, Hannah...’

In her bed now, Hannah turned onto her side. A tear trickled down the side of her nose, falling onto the pillow...

Hearing Matt so desperate, knowing he sounded that way because of her, made Hannah feel euphoric as nothing else ever had. Matt was all there was in her heart right now.

‘Take me, Matt.’

She needed him so badly. Needed him to unleash himself upon her. To have him bare himself to her; maybe that would keep her glued together. She needed to feel whole with him.

Hannah wrapped her legs around his waist as he picked her up and walked them to the bedroom, where he laid her down gently on the covers.

She had never seen his eyes so dark. That handsome face that always seemed to have a smile didn’t have one now. All she could see was heat in his eyes and sorrow on his face. It was impossible not to be moved by this man. In a week she had gone from dancing with him in a club to wishing he would never leave, but she knew that he had to. His life was in London and hers was here in Melbourne.

Reaching up, she cupped his cheek and he leaned into the touch, kissing her palm. And then her wrist. And then her shoulder. When he sucked down her neck, she gasped, and when his lips closed around her nipple she arched into his mouth.

‘So perfect,’ he said against her skin. Hannah’s whole body was shaking with need. A light breeze might have made her explode.

‘Matt, I...’

‘Shh,’ he soothed with more kisses before pressing his forehead to hers and entering her with a hard thrust. ‘You will always be perfect.’

Tears sprang to her eyes from his words and the feel of him rocking into her with the full power of his hips. Unintelligible moans were pouring from her as he took them both to the edge and then over, falling, shattering together. Hannah clenching around Matt whose strangled groan as he filled her made electricity dance over her body.

It had never been like this with anyone, and she was sure it never would be again.

Both Matt and Hannah lay in the dark of night, trying to reach for that perfect moment that had changed everything.

CHAPTER TWENTY

THERE WAS A pounding behind Matt’s eyes that refused to abate. He leaned his forehead against the upper cupboards as rich, dark coffee spilt from the portafilter into his cup. He’d had to make it stronger than usual this morning. He hadn’t got a wink of sleep. All he could think about was their last night in Melbourne and what Hannah had recently told him. The trust she’d placed in him. Matt lifted his glasses, pinching the bridge of his nose.

He needed to talk to Hannah, clear the air. She was so important to him and not just because of their son. He pulled his cup out from under the spout just as the machine clicked off. Shuffling footsteps sounded behind him and he sensed Hannah enter before she uttered a tired, ‘Good morning...’

Turning round, he saw she looked exactly as he did—puffy eyes with dark bruises underneath. Her shoulders were slightly slumped forward. Apparently neither of them had got any sleep the night before.

Matt placed a cup of peppermint tea next to her. He had to apologise before he said anything else. ‘Hannah.’ She turned to face him, looking so tired he felt his heart clench at the sight. ‘I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I am glad you told me.’

‘It’s fine, Matt. I shouldn’t have—’

‘No.’ He cut her off. ‘You should have. I’m always in your corner. I just don’t know how to do this. Be what you’re looking for.’

Hannah fought the urge to shake her head. She accepted his apology. How could she not? But he wasn’t being honest with himself.

All night she’d lain in that bed, thinking about their week together in Melbourne. The things he’d said to her. How he had touched her. That last night, nothing had come between them. He had asked her not to hide, and she hadn’t, because all week he had shown her who he was.
