She was scared. She still didn’t know where he stood and she felt exposed, like a raw nerve.

‘Fine.’

She placed her hands on the arm rest, ready to push herself to standing, but a strong arm wrapped under her shoulders and helped her to her feet.

Thank you was on the tip of her tongue, but she swallowed it back, holding on to her ire. She turned to face him and her heart skipped a beat as he grazed her cheek with the back of his fingers.

She saw his jaw twitch as he watched his fingers, as if he was annoyed at the touch.

‘Goodbye, Matt.’

CHAPTER THREE

HANNAH FELT OFF-BALANCE leaving Matt’s office. She stepped out into the afternoon sunlight, trembling with pent-up rage. Talking to Matt hadn’t helped at all. The biggest problem was that he’d had almost no reaction. Well, until he’d accused her of lying, of planning this pregnancy to extort him.

How dared he?

Her eyes suddenly burned but she refused to allow a single tear to escape.

There was no way she would be a crazy, crying, pregnant lady on a street in London.

Hannah tossed her red hair back and hailed a black cab. It stopped right in front of her. She told the driver where to take her and settled back in the seat, still trying to make sense of all Matt said.

He had clearly seen she was pregnant the moment she’d walked in. Her pulse had quickened when she’d seen his eyes rove over her body. It was the same way he had looked at her seven months ago. Just that alone had made heat pool in her belly, a reaction that irritated her.

They were done. They had said goodbye. She hadn’t needed Matt Taylor to wreak havoc on her system because she hadn’t needed a man in her life. She’d had that once and never again. No, all she’d wanted was a temporary romance—a night, a week, an ephemeral affair. But now she was attached to Matt.

Or was she? He hadn’t said he wanted to be in the baby’s life, had he? He hadn’t really said anything. Maybe her baby would be just like her—not good enough. The thought had fire coursing through her. Her baby was worth the world.

This felt so much worse than not telling Matt at all.

She closed her eyes, thinking back to that fateful day when she’d first met him. She’d had no idea that she would end up here, in a London cab, more confused and angry than she had ever been.

Seven months ago

Hannah walked beside her friend as they cut through the crowd of gyrating bodies moving to the pulsing rhythm in Zephyr, the most exclusive VIP club in Melbourne.

The space was glossy. Almost every surface was black or gold. Even the wavy lights above their heads that meandered through the entire club cast a golden glow, oozing glamour and opulence afforded to the very fortunate. Tonight, thanks to Emma’s new boyfriend and his friend—neither of whom Hannah had met—that included them.

The two friends pushed their way over to the private booths. The shiny floor turned into a plush carpet and in this area there was no mass of bodies. Cosy tables and chairs were dotted here and there. A bar tender entertained a group with his flairing skills at the backlit bar. Ahead of them every booth was fully occupied.

Except one. The only one surrounded by a gold curtain.

Emma said something but Hannah didn’t know what. In fact, the whole world had gone silent. A golden and glorious man sat in the booth. He was tall and broad in a dark suit with no tie, and it was as if the very air bowed to him.

Something about him called out to Hannah. Maybe she called to him too, because he turned to look at her and the force of his light-green eyes left her breathless. Then his lips curved up and his smile was devastating.

This man was Adonis.

They arrived at the table and he stood, towering over her. That smile fixed in place. Emma was about to make the introductions but he beat her to it.

‘Matt Taylor.’ His voice was deep and rich his English accent so very sexy. Hannah was suddenly overcome with thoughts of rich caramel.

‘Hannah Murphy,’ she replied, very nearly breathless.

He took her hand, bringing her fingers to his lips. Her skin sparked at the touch. ‘It’s very nice to meet you, Hannah Murphy.’

She wanted to hear him say her name again.
