His lips lightly brushed over hers, parting to take hers between them. He was gentle and tender, taking his time, making her crave him even more while he gave himself to her bit by bit. She felt one of his hands slide down her neck, over her bare shoulder, down her arm to land on her waist, pulling her against the length of him. Every sound, every person in the club, died away. It was just them in this space, in this moment suspended in time.

Hannah wrapped her arms around his neck, trying to get even closer, and then she was pressed against him. Bands of solid muscle wrapped around her back, keeping her safely against him and, as she felt his warmth dip into every part of her, his tongue sought hers out, entwining with hers. Heat exploded in her core. Her body tingled as she felt his fingers splay then fist the fabric on her back, as though he was trying to control the need to rip the damned thing off.

Matt kissed with his whole body and now she was desperate to feel that body on hers.

‘Matt...’ She moaned into his mouth, feeling his hardness press against her belly. ‘Take me home.’

His lips left hers and she wanted to revolt but then she saw how dark his green eyes were and she knew he would take her. That he was feeling this mad intensity too.

His fingers laced with hers and she grinned when he adjusted his suit jacket to hide the evidence of his arousal. ‘Lead the way...’

‘Ma’am?’ The taxi driver’s voice broke through the fog of her memory of the first night they had spent together. ‘We’re here.’

They were parked on the kerb outside her hotel. Hannah hadn’t noticed at all. She cleared her throat, paid the driver and walked into the building.

CHAPTER FOUR

Seven months ago

MATT’S FOREHEAD WAS pressed against Hannah’s. He could hardly catch his breath. Shattering...that was what he was doing. Hannah’s naked body was laid out before him. Her eyes were glistening with everything he wanted to hear her say but knew he never would. In this hotel room, Matt couldn’t think. This was the last time he would be with her. The last time he would taste her skin. Tomorrow he would be gone.

And then it dawned on him that all he felt was her skin. He hadn’t even thought of protection. How could he have lost control like that?

‘Hannah, I’m so sorry. We didn’t use—’

‘It’s okay, Matt.’

Her hand rested on his cheek—a gentle touch he wanted more of—before her fingers brushed through his hair. He closed his eyes, relishing the feeling.

‘We’re okay.’

‘I’ll go to a pharmacy.’

‘You don’t need to,’ she said with a sad smile. ‘I can’t have a baby.’

‘Hannah...’ His voice was a broken rasp. ‘I’m sorry.’ He pulled her into his tight embrace, feeling her sorrow as his own.

Matt sat at his desk, reading the same line on the report in his hands for the tenth time. Heaving a sigh, he took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose.

This was ridiculous. He couldn’t concentrate on anything. From the moment Hannah had walked in it was as if the solid ground beneath him had turned into quicksand.

Matt’s focus was usually legendary but now he wasn’t even sure how he’d made it through his afternoon meeting.

A baby! He was going to be a father. Well, he didn’t know that for certain yet. The paternity test hadn’t yet been done but Hannah seemed convinced.

But she was lying. She had to be.

The look on her face that night, though, had been real. Hadn’t it? Could she just be that good an actress?

How on earth was he going to deal with this? What would his parents have said about their son now if they’d still been alive? Would they have had a word of advice, or would his father have been disappointed in him?

He was fairly certain he knew the answer. His father had made no secret of what he thought of Matt’s life choices, how poorly they reflected on the Taylor name. A hedonistic lifestyle was not what they’d been about. A solid man, according to his father, was one who created a strong family, made a successful name for themselves, didn’t act on passions or whims. And that wasn’t Matt. According to his father, his were the actions of a boy, and not one to be proud of.

His family had been a strong unit. Matt didn’t even know what he was to Hannah any more.
