Page 47 of Fragile Lies

His bedroom’s huge, well his entire home is quite large from what I’ve seen so far, and it looks as though he paid someone to decorate it. Everything’s coordinated and designed perfectly for his space.

He lives in a quiet neighborhood, about thirty minutes from NYC, and every time I’m here I bask in the quiet. You don’t get silence living where I do. Between the cars, the ambulances, and the night owls, silence isn’t a luxury I’m given.

He yawns as his breath tickles the back of my neck. I turn around, finding him peering at me through a lazy squint, his smile both arousing and inviting. “I hope you slept well, baby.”

“I did actually, you’re a pretty comfortable bed buddy.”

He wraps both arms around me, yanking me closer, until his stubble ghosts my cheek. “You’re quite comfortable yourself,” he says, kissing the tip of my nose.

We remain silent, enjoying the feel of each other while the birds break into a song, serenading us through the window.

His phone rings and he grumbles, tightening his grasp on me. But whoever it is calls again, clearly not giving up so easily. “Get it,” I murmur.

He rubs his nose against my cheek. “I don’t wanna let you go.”

“I’ll still be here.”

He pulls away just a little. “You promise?” he asks, his gaze penetrating mine. A look of sadness passes through his eyes before it disappears, showing me another glimpse into his cracks and web of well-guarded secrets.

He turns over and picks up the phone, answering it once he looks at the screen.

“Hey, Mom.” He turns back to me. “Sorry, had a late night. It was Lexi’s birthday party.” Shaking his head, he glances at me with an expression that screamssave me. “No, I didn’t, Ma. Geez. Why can’t you go and bother Josh or Jacob about it?” He pauses, giving her time to respond. “I’m not doing that.” He gives me an exasperated smile. “I know it’s your birthday.” I hear her say something back, causing him to shake his head again. “Okay. Yes, I said fine! I’ll ask her, I promise.” I giggle at the annoyed look on his face. “Bye, Mom. Love you too.” He quickly hangs up and grunts, looking up at the white ceiling.

“So your mom’s a bit of a pain too?” I tease.

“Oh, baby, you havenoidea.”

“What did she want you to ask me?”

“It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”Oh no, he’s not getting away with that so easily.

“Just tell me or else!”

“Or else what?”

“Or else this!” I tickle his sides and he laughs, letting me at first before flipping on top of me and pinning my hands above my head.

I lose all sense of space and time as his hard form presses into me, his shirt on my body sliding up my thighs from the friction.

His face lowers into my neck as his tongue snakes up to my ear, nibbling and sucking my lobe. “She’s having a birthday party next weekend and wanted me to invite you.” His voice is gruff, still carrying sleep mingled with desire.

“You referred to me by name. I hadn’t realized she knew about me,” I breathe out in a low whisper.

“She does.” His breath caresses the delicate skin of my neck. “I may have told her you’re my girlfriend.”

“What!” I try to push him off of me but he’s like a pile of bricks. “Jax!” He pulls back, his eyes meeting mine. “Why would you say that? There’s no way I can go now!”

“Please, Lexi, be my date for this damn thing. It’d make my mom’s night.” I narrow my gaze in suspicion as he continues. “She’s turning sixty and having a big party at their house.” His tone changes as he brings one hand down to cup my chin. “I’ve wanted you there, I just—I didn’t know how to ask without making a thing of it.”

“A thing of it? Ohhh, you mean pretend we’re a couple when we’re not?” I release an angry sigh. “Why the hell would you lie?”

“Because she won’t stop hounding me about settling down, so I caved. She just worries. A lot. I wanted to give her one day where she didn’t have to.” My throat shrinks against the lump that slowly climbs up. “I know I probably don’t deserve this, but please, sweetheart, do this one thing for me.” My heart gives a sudden lurch at the term of endearment. I’m so weak when it comes to this man, but I can’t afford to be, I can’t afford to shatter when he ends this.

We agreed, no feelings, only sex. I have to remember that every time he touches me, every time his lips land on mine, every time he buries himself inside me, fitting like a puzzle piece I’ve been missing.

He slides a hand between our bodies, slipping his expert fingers inside my already drenched core. “I promise there’ll be a lot of orgasms in it for you. And I bet no one has ever made you come as good as I do.” He isn’t wrong. He knows how to wring all the pleasure out of me until I'm begging for more.

“Fine.” I moan as his fingers enter me, slow yet deep. “I’ll do it.”
