Remy leads me out of the hotel in silence, the tension in his back evident with each step he takes. He’s angry. I’m not sure why considering this was all his fucking idea. The air between us is thick with dark desires that we’re both trying to fight.

He holds open the car door for me, and I slip inside. I hear him saying something to the driver but can’t make out the words. And then he enters and sits opposite me. I’d rather he sit next to me, as his gaze is too intense.

The door slams shut, and the engine starts, driving us away from the hotel. I gaze out the window and watch as the hotel disappears from view.

As the city lights of Chicago blur past the window, a nocturnal tapestry unfolds. Skyscrapers pierce the night sky, their illuminated windows twinkling like stars. The neon signs of bars and clubs pulse with life, adding splashes of color to the urban landscape.

I have to focus on what is out there to distract myself from the man in here.

“Ella.” His commanding voice makes my heart rate spike.

I look into his dark eyes, noting how they look almost black in the back of the car. “Yes?”

“You need to be careful around Alex Vishekov. I’m not sure what his motives are for singling you out.”

I laugh. “I need to be careful around every man at that event. They’re all mobsters.”

He clenches his fists by his sides. “Pick someone other than him.”

I search his eyes and realize he’s jealous. “I like Alex.”

His eyes flash. “I don’t care.”

“If you’re going to force me into a marriage I don’t want, you can at least let me pick someone I like.” The man I want to pick is sitting before me. I don’t say that, though.

“No. Stay away from Alex.”

I shake my head. “If I’d be fawning over Bennet instead, that would have been fine?” I spoke with Bennet for a short while when Alex went to get us drinks. He seemed nice enough, too, for a mobster.

There’s a dangerous flicker in his eyes. “No.”

I sigh. “I’m wondering what you want from me. You expect me to marry one of these men, but I can’t talk to them, is that it?”

“Fuck’s sake. Stop it.”

“Stop what?”

He moves toward me and wraps his huge palm around my throat, squeezing softly. Remy’s size is intoxicating as he takes up all the space in the back of the car. “Stop trying to make me jealous.”

I shake my head. “Make you jealous? For God’s sake, I’m doing what you told me to do.” I narrow my eyes. “If you don’t want me talking to anyone else, do something about it.”

He tightens his grasp on my throat. “You know I can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t?” I push because even though I spent an evening with a charming, handsome man who is far more suited to me, it doesn’t stop me from wanting the man before me.

“Ella,” he practically growls in warning.

“Yes, Daddy?” I tease.

“Fuck.” He yanks me toward him and kisses me hard, his tongue sliding into my mouth.

I moan, my body burning for his touch. It has been ever since he made me come on his desk.

He finally pulls away, his eyes dark with lust. “I told you in my office that was the last time,” he says gruffly.

I tilt my head, unsure where I get the nerves to do what I do next. Dropping to my knees before him, I grab the zipper of his pants. “But I didn’t take care of you, it’s only—“

He grabs my wrist, eyes as black as obsidian as he stares down at me. “What are you doing?”
