He places a hand on my forearm. “Don’t you think we should get to know each other better?” His eyes dart toward Ella and Alex. “We’re likely to be family soon.” His smirk makes me want to punch it from his face. I made up my mind when Massimo told me that the Vishekov family may have been behind Erin’s murder. She’s not being sold. I’ll pay the fucking reserve on her.

“That remains to be seen.”

“Alex and Ella are getting on well. She’ll have a good life with him.”

I clench my jaw. “Money will talk when it comes to it.”

“Don’t worry, we have plenty of money to buy your stepdaughter.”

I nod my head. “Fine, I’ll see you around.” I walk away from him before I do something stupid and go to the opposite side of the restaurant, sitting on a plush sofa where I have a good view of Ella.

She’s still unaware I’m here, watching her in the shadows like a creep. I am a creep. And now it’s come to light that the Vishekov Bratva can’t be trusted, I’m no longer going to hold back.

As if she feels my stare, her eyes meet mine. A flash of fire ignites in them as I lift my glass to her.

Her brow furrows, and she turns to Alex, excusing herself.

I shouldn’t let her approach, but I do.

She walks over and takes a seat opposite me.

“I thought you were staying away.” Her eyes narrow. “Why are you here?”

I sip my scotch before leaning forward with my elbows on my thighs. “Because I am. Is that a problem?”

She tilts her head. “Are you going to be able to control your anger issues? I’m going to continue talking to Alex.”

“Is that what you want, Ella? To be married to Alex Vishekov?”

Her jaw clenches. “You know it’s not.”

Well, she’s going to get her wish tonight. Once this stupid fucking lunch ends, I’m taking her away for the weekend. Away from all of this to figure out what the fuck is going on between us.

“When you get home, I want you to pack. Warm clothes. Enough for a weekend.”

Her brow furrows. “What for?”

“No questions. Just do it.” I walk back to the bar with my empty scotch glass before I change my mind.

Learning Vishekov might be behind her mother’s death has made me reevaluate my plan. Who knows who will buy her as a wife or why? I assumed it would keep her safe, but the only way to ensure her safety is to keep her by my side.

ELLA

Remy grabs my suitcase off me and places it in the back of his SUV alongside one other case. I swallow hard at the look in his eyes. He looks a little insane. If I’m honest, I’ve never seen him like this.

“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”

His dark eyes find mine. “Get in.”

A shudder races down my spine. “Not until you tell me where you’re taking me.” I raise my chin.

His jaw clenches, and he steps closer to me. “Get in the car before I throw you in, Ella.”

I feel particularly brave, taking a step closer to him. “No. You don’t get to order me around like that anymore.”

His jaw works. “Are you trying to piss me off?”
