“Arranged marriage?” I can’t keep the shock from my voice.

“Yes, you’re a Morrone now, and who you marry is important.” Remy’s dark eyes look almost black in the dim light of the dining room.

This is going worse than I ever could have imagined. When Mom said she’d married someone rich, I assumed he was a businessman, not a criminal.

“Are you alright? You’re looking a little pale?” Luca asks, a teasing lilt to his voice.

I glare at him, already developing a dislike for both of my stepbrothers. “It’s not every day you find out you’ve been forced into a fucking mobster family, so no, I’m not okay.”

Luca chuckles. “She’s feisty, I’ll give her that.”

”I think you’ll fit right in.” Leo’s tone is humourless.

I clench my fists beneath the table, holding back a retort.

“You’ll accept it in time.” Remy brings his glass of whiskey to his lips, taking a sip. “They all do.”

I want to question whotheyare, but the man is so intimidating I’d rather keep my mouth shut. His eyes don’t leave me, and his intense gaze makes me feel mixed emotions. All I want is for this night to be over so I can plan how to escape this hell Mom dragged me into.

As dinner progresses, I feel like I’m trapped in a nightmare. The conversation is heavily laced with innuendos that make my skin crawl. Luca and Leo keep making inappropriate comments, while Remy is the epitome of a grumpy older man. Mom is as bad, encouraging their behavior with her silence. It’s like I don’t even know her anymore.

In the middle of the meal, one of Remy’s men enters and whispers something in his ear. Remy’s expression darkens, and he excuses himself, leaving the rest of us to finish dinner. I can’t shake off the feeling that something bad is happening, and I’m stuck in the middle.

As soon as dinner is over, I rush to my room, eager to escape the suffocating atmosphere of this family. I turn on the light and take a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. I can’t believe this is my life now. I dreamed of being a writer, traveling the world, and meeting new people. Now, I’m trapped in a mansion with criminals who insist I will be forced to marry one.

As I’m lost in thought, I hear a knock on the door. I open it to see Luca standing there, a sly smile on his face.

“Hey, Ella,” he says, leaning against the door frame. “I thought I’d come to say goodnight.”

I roll my eyes, not in the mood for his games. “Goodnight, Luca. I’m tired.”

He cocks his head to the side. “Are you sure? We could have some fun.”

My blood runs cold at his words. I take a step back, feeling my heart rate spike. “What do you mean?” My voice is barely a whisper.

Luca steps closer, scanning my body with his dark eyes. “You know, fun. We can escape this boring reality and enjoy a bit of excitement. I could show you a good time.”

I shake my head, my eyes narrowing. “You’re my stepbrother, Luca. Leave me alone.”

He chuckles, stepping closer. “Come on. Don’t be so uptight. I promise you’ll enjoy it.”

I reach for the doorknob. “I said leave me alone. I’m not interested.”

He grabs my wrist, pulling me toward him and into the corridor. “I don’t think you understand, Ella. You’re part of this family and will do as you’re told.”

I try to yank my wrist out of his grip, but he’s too strong. “Let go of me!” I hiss.

He leans in, his lips almost touching my ear. “You know you want this,” he whispers.

I grit my teeth, feeling a surge of fury. “Let go of me, Luca!” I repeat, louder this time.

Remy appears behind him, his eyes dark with anger. “What the hell is going on here?” His angry gaze is directed at Luca.

Luca drops my wrist, taking a step back. “Just having a little fun, Dad.”

Remy’s expression darkens. “That’s not how we treat family.” He steps closer. “She’s your stepsister, and you’ll stay away from her. Got it?”

Luca’s smirk disappears. “Fine.” He holds his hands up. “I knew you’d destroy my stepsister fantasy.” He winks at me and then walks away.
