The old man is speechless for the first time in years.

“If you want me around, that is.”

Choking back whatever feelings are bubbling to the surface, he says, “That sounds like a real good, solid plan.”

I pat him on the back before I leave.

“You wanna tell Mom when she comes home for lunch?”

Dad shakes his head. “Nah, you tell her. She’ll be happy to hear it from you.”

ChapterTwelve

Caroline

I feellike a schoolgirl who just got asked to prom by the star quarterback.

That’s how Cash makes me feel.

I gingerly sit at my usual spot at the bait shop, my muscles fluttering between my thighs. I try not to blush as I fill my coffee cup with Bonnie’s fresh brew.

“You look a little flushed this morning. You running a fever?” Bonnie asks, which only makes me blush deeper.

“No, it’s my new makeup. I think I might be sensitive to something in it. And I might just be a teensy bit hungover from last night.”

“Take it easy, and don’t wear yourself out, honey.”

Oh, boy. If only she knew what her son just did to me.

“I promise I’ll be taking it easy today. You schedule your thyroid appointment yet?”

Bonnie nods. “Sure did. Bill has an appointment with a new physical therapist in Traverse City who’s supposed to be great with stubborn old farts. And my general practitioner is there too, so he’s going to run some tests.”

“That’s wonderful, Bonnie.”

We chat for a while, then she heads out.

I sit with my coffee and burn through three cups of it as I hammer out words on my keyboard.

A couple of hours later, a bowl of coffee ice cream slides across the table. I look up and smile at Bonnie, but it’s not Bonnie looking back at me. It’s Cash.

“Hi! Where’s Bonnie?”

He looks mock offended. “What am I, chopped liver?”

“Definitely not,” I laugh as he surprises me by leaning in for a soft kiss.

My pulse quickens. “What was that for?”

“I hadn’t seen you in a couple of hours, and I wanted to give you that.”

“What if your mom sees?”

“She’ll probably start jumping for joy and call the newspaper,” he says. When I roll my eyes, he tells me she went home to have lunch with his dad.

“How’s he doing today?” I ask.

“Good. Nosy. Seems to be in an excellent mood today.”
