“You didn’t have to get me anything,” she says.

“Open it now, before the date.”

She chuckles as she opens the small gift bag. “It’s an…egg?”

“Not exactly Faberge, but it’s hand carved and painted by one of the artists that displays at Mom’s shop. To always remind you of the day you took those eggs away from me.”

She looks from the carved egg to me. “So I can always remember the day I was a total brat?”

“Nah. So you can remember the day you stole my heart.”

She melts, and my head grows three sizes.

“Cash! This is the most thoughtful gift anyone ever gave me. And speaking of going away presents. We need to stop by your parents’ house.”

She turns and grabs a Tupperware container from the table and pats the lid.

“You made the cookies,” I say, shaking my head.

“You can have some too, don’t worry.”

I pull her to me and land a kiss against her sweet mouth. “You are too good for me, Caroline.”

“Hush your mouth. I’m exactly perfect for you, not better or worse. And I happen to be pretty decent at baking.”

Slipping my arm around her waist, I feel compelled to remind her of a few things. “You’re also highly skilled in making me crazy for you. And sticking your tongue down my throat…”

“Cash,” she breathes, playfully swatting me on the shoulder.

“And you’re extremely talented at putting filthy thoughts into my head.”

“Stop it, you’re gonna make me red before we get to the restaurant. Everyone is gonna know we slept together.”

“Good. Then everyone will know you’re mine,” I murmur in her ear.

Was that too pushy? I picked it up from one of her fiery books.

“Sounds like we’ll be burning calories later. Let’s eat!” Caroline laughs.

Her stomach rumbles on cue, and my own hunger pangs match hers.

“I sure hope you ate more than ice cream today,” I say.

“Ice cream and coffee,” she says.

I hitch her impossibly closer and ask, “What am I going to do with you?”

Caroline arches an eyebrow and answers, “Now that, I’d love to find out.”

Nancy, the owner of the Snug, seats Cash and me at a corner booth closest to the window overlooking the marina.

“It’s such a pretty spot,” I say.

“You like the view?” Cash asks.
