“I’d love that. And the food’s on me.”

“I’ll have the nurse come back with your discharge papers. It’ll be a few minutes.” The doctor left, followed by the nurse rolling out the cart of instruments.

“Do you want me to go get your sister?”

Lyric stood up and held her hand out toward the chair. “I want you to sit down.”

He was about to say he was fine, but she shook her head.

“Don’t argue. Just sit.”

He did so, and she brought the stool closer, sat on it, and put her hands on his knees. “How was your day?”

He understood she was trying to keep things simple. “Despite how it looks, it was actually good.”

“Can you tell me what happened?”

“Not exactly. I can say that the person who got the jump on me won’t be coming for me again.”

Her eyes went wide.

“He’s not dead,” he assured her. “He’s under arrest.”

“But you’re not.”

“I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“He attacked you for no reason?”

He sighed. “It’s complicated.”

“Who was that guy with you?”

“I can’t say right now, but you’ll meet him again soon.”

She smiled. “So he’s a friend?”

“Yes. We’re really close.”

She raised a brow. “Why didn’t he stay with you?”

“He had to get to work. I needed to be with you.” He hated the frown that bent her soft lips.

“You should be at home resting. Do you have a concussion?”

“A mild one. I’ll be fine in a few days.” He took her good hand in his and squeezed it. “Don’t worry about me.”

“I can’t help it. I don’t like seeing you hurt like this.”

He wanted to reassure her, but the nurse walked in.

“You’re all set to go, Miss Wilde. Any questions?”

She took her discharge papers from the nurse. “No. I’m good. Thank you for everything.”

“My pleasure.” The nurse left them again.

Viper stood alone with Lyric. He immediately pulled her into his arms and held her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his good shoulder. “I promise you, Angel, this will all be over soon, and I’ll tell you everything.”
