He tried to hold back a smile. “It made me popular.”

“I bet you never had trouble getting a date.”

He kissed her hand. “I really want to take you out on a real date.”

“Dinner at my place was a real date,” she reminded him.

He appreciated her so much for enjoying whatever time they spent together. He went back to their original topic. “Nick had a single-minded mission in life. He knew what he wanted early. I came into it later and discovered a skillset I didn’t really know I could use.”

“And what was that?”

“I’m a good liar.”

She cocked an eyebrow. “Why would you need to be a good liar?”

He didn’t like the thoughtful way she looked at him, like she was putting pieces together. “Never mind about that for now. The thing is, Nick and I, we’re close. Always have been, even though we’re not really alike. I irritate him. A lot sometimes. Because he likes to stick to the rules. And I sometimes color outside the lines.”

“Aria is like Nick, I think. Smart. Logical. She likes things to add up. Routine is her best friend. Melody is a live-for-today-not-what-could-happen-tomorrow kind of person. Jax is as steady as they come. But he can be fierce when there’s a threat to someone he loves.”

“What do you think I am?”

“You’re Jax on steroids. You have conviction. Truth matters to you. You don’t tolerate people who hurt other people, yet you don’t seek retribution, you want justice.” She’d nailed him.

“You don’t think I want to punish the asshole who hurt you?”

“Do you want to hurt them?”

“I’d like to, very much.” Even though he knew it wouldn’t solve anything.

“But would you?” she asked but knew the answer, because she really did get him.

“Not unless I had to.”

“One look at you, what you’d like to do to them written all over your face, they’d know better than to take you on.”

That gave him pause. “Do you think I’m scary?”

“Not to me. I don’t think there’s anything in you that could hurt me.”

“I think you could take me down with a few words.”I never want to see you againcame to mind.

“I’d need a damn good reason to ignore my heart and say something to hurt you. And if I ever did, I’d be lying. Or have a really severe head injury. I’d pretty much have to be insane.”

He chuckled, and she smiled. It felt good to sit and talk like this.

“So you’re thinking about keeping me.” He hoped forever.

“I decided I wanted you long before you stood me up for dinner.”

He frowned, feeling incredibly sorry about that. “I didn’t know it was a date. I apologized. And I’ve wanted you since the moment you caught me staring at you and you smiled at me.”

She grinned again. “Because you looked so intense, and I thought if I smiled, you’d smile back, but you looked even more disgruntled that I smiled, and I thought,he doesn’t want to like me, but he does.”

“I did. I do. In fact, I more than like you.”

“I felt that when we made love. I feel it when you kiss me. I feel it even when you’re not here and I know you want to be here.”

He brushed his hand down her long hair. “You can’t be this perfect.”
