I draw in a breath and exhale slowly. “Can you tell Drew that he doesn’t need to fire me? Once I check in the last person, I’ll just leave. I’ll put the keys in the drawer and sign myself out.”

“Sure.” Todd shrugs. “I wouldn’t want to wait around for him to explode all over me, either.”

“He already got me once today.”

“Sorry. He can be a beast.”

“Why do you still work for him?”

Todd shrugs. “I don’t like the big chains. Generally, Drew and I get along fine. I leave him alone.”

“Can you let me know when you tell him, and what he says?” I grip the handle of my chair. This conversation is so hard. “And I’m sorry if it puts you in a bad position.”

“He can’t yell at me any louder than he did at Maria. I’m surprised half of Atlanta didn’t hear.” Todd turns a treat jar in circles. He’s uncomfortable, too. “I’ll let you know.”

“Thanks.”

The man with the Pomeranians enters the lobby, and Todd comes forward to help untangle their leashes.

I return to my screen, madly trying to finish out anything that needs doing before the end of the day.

Because apparently, it’s my last one at Daniels Vet Care.

Chapter 34

DREW

I’m trying to convince an eighty-pound Doberman to take a pill when I realize Todd has been hovering unnecessarily for the last five minutes.

“Just say whatever you need to say,” I tell him, packing more cheese on the pill. Despite whining from pain, this dog could find a med pill in a haystack. I’ll have to suggest grinding them up into a paste, because the owner will never get it done. I have the option of a needle, but I didn’t want to take Todd or Maria out of their exam rooms.

But now Todd’s here.

I tempt the dog with the cheese one more time while speaking to Todd. “You’re still not talking.”

Todd clears his throat. “Ensley knows she’s fired. She’s finishing things up and will leave her keys on the desk. You don’t have to yell at her again.”

The dog sniffs at my hand, but he’s figured me out. He won’t even eat the cheese off the pill at this point.

“Who says I yelled at her?”

“Anyone in the building at the time.”

Todd has never challenged me before. I palm the cheese with the pill and hold on to the Doberman’s collar so I can look at mytech. Is he under Ensley’s spell, too? Maybe she’s got a dozen men at her feet.

“Did she tell you to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“And you told her she was fired?”

He stands taller. “I did.”

“Did Maria tell you?”

“No. You were yelling. I heard.”

I clamp my jaw tight. “Thank you for passing along the message. Now hold on to this dog. He won’t take the pain pill by mouth, so I’m going to inject him.”
