Poor Drew. This is terrible.

But he can be his own person. He can control himself. He’s thirty years old. Surely he knows that.

Doesn’t he?

I simply have to talk to him. Shock him with what I know.

I have nothing to lose.

Chapter 38

DREW

The latest receptionist, Tatiana, pops into the surgery bay on Friday.

“Why are you interrupting?” I ask, forgetting I’m trying to improve my tone. Tatiana furrows her brow at me, her long ponytail of black braids swinging.

“Dr.Drew, stop snapping like you’re the last turtle in the pond. I have to give you messages, and if you can’t handle an interruption during a basic neutering job, you need to get yourself a more seasoned vet all up in here.”

Todd, who is assisting in the surgery, bites back a smile.

“Fine.” I turn back to the dog. “What is it?”

“Nope,” Tatiana says. “You ask nicely.”

This is the receptionist I deserve. I know it. “Can you please convey to me your message?”

“I’d be happy to, Dr.Daniels. Your friends Franklin and Ronnie are here to see you.”

I didn’t expect that. “Tell them I’ll be there in about ten minutes.”

Tatiana spins around, heading back to the lobby. It’s her second day, and it’s pretty clear she’s more in charge than I am.

“Those your friends who got married?” Todd asks.

“Yeah.”

And it’s odd that they’re here. They should barely be back from their honeymoon cruise. They’ve been totally out of contact.

But they probably know about Ensley now. I guess this confrontation was unavoidable.

I leave Todd in charge of watching the beagle come out of anesthesia, and shuck my white coat on the way to my office.

The moment I walk in, Ronnie stands up and says, “Drew Daniels, who do you think you are?”

Yep, they know about Ensley.

“Welcome back.”

Ronnie charges up to me, all four feet, eleven inches of her, and pushes on my chest. “You had sex with my best friend! And then you fired her! You’re a monster, and I should have thrown you out of my wedding myself!”

“Babe, babe, let’s discuss this like adults.” Franklin draws her back against his chest. “Ronnie had about seventy messages from Ensley when we hit land. We put the story together.”

I clamp my jaw to avoid roaring. My voice is measured as I say, “Then you know she lied about living here. About taking this job.”

Ronnie wrestles away from Franklin to stab me in the chest again. “She thought she was helping. You were the ass who assumed she wanted to work for you. She didn’t know what to do.”

“Oh.” I think back on that first day. Ensley had seemed flustered when I said she was hired. I thought she was overwhelmed that I took her on so quickly.
