Maybe I need a huge fresh start.

I wait for my noodles to cook and scroll through links for job sites. I click on one and type inbank teller.

It assumes Alabama based on the geolocation, but then I get an idea and change it to Atlanta, Georgia. If not for Drew, for my sisters.

Several line up, all requiring me to sign up before I can look closer. I glance around the room, making sure nobody’s coming in to see what I’m doing, then quickly register for the site.

Gosh. There are a lot of openings. You can upload your résumé and have them send you a list, but then one catches my eye.

Farm to Market Bank and Trust.

Not Atlanta, but Marietta. It’s a town just outside Atlanta on the same side of the city where my sister lives. Cindy probably didn’t recognize it.

Me:Cindy, there’s a spot in Marietta.

Cindy:Where is that?

Me:Just outside Atlanta!

There’s a pause. I start gulping my noodles. Lunch is almost over.

Cindy:It’s entry level. You’ll take a cut.

Me:But I will live with my sisters. I can afford a cut.

Cindy:You want it? I’ll put you in for it.

Me:I want it!

Cindy:I’ll email you some paperwork. We’ll make this happen.

My heart absolutely sings. It will be a bit of a commute, and less money until I can work my way back up. But I’ll be with my sisters.

And not so close to Drew that I think about him all the time.

Of course I’ll think about him all the time.

The thirty-minute mark hits, so I quickly toss my trash and hurry to the teller booths, silencing my phone. I can’t wait to tell Tillie and Lila, but I’ll make sure the paperwork goes through first.

I give Milton a bright smile as I sit on a stool at the windows.

“It’s quiet out here,” he says. “Go wipe down the plants in the lobby. They look dusty.”

Janet sneers at me.

I swivel on the seat. “Isn’t that what the cleaning staff—”

“Are you questioning your superior?”

This isn’t worth it. I’m as good as out of here, but I’d rather not get fired before we can get my transfer through. That might look bad.

“Sure, Milton. I’ll do it.”

I open the janitorial closet and find a clean cloth and a spray bottle. Milton stands close to Janet, and I start to wonder if something’s happening between them as she gazes up at him.

Don’t do it! I want to tell her. Not with your boss!

But I can’t stop others from making the mistake I did.
