I pull my phone closer to my face. The cat is clearly on a bed. I can see the edge of it, and a hardwood floor below. That is not a veterinary clinic.

And he’s introducing her. Like she’s new.

He adopted a cat?

Did I influence him to do that?

This might be better than a rose. Better than the slinky dress and the beautiful set and that heartrending moment when two people declare that they belong together.

Because this is Drew we’re talking about. He’s never going to be in any bachelorette situation.

But he’s changed something about himself.

Just two days after we spent time together making confessions!

I blow up the picture and study every inch. In the corner is a bit of the dresser. I see a wallet and a set of keys. A folder. And the bottom half of a framed photograph.

Who would Drew be sentimental enough about to have a picture of on his dresser?

It can’t be a girlfriend. He was very clear about that.

His parents? His family?

It’s definitely people. There are legs. No one wears a skirt.

I wish I knew. I want to know everything about Drew. I want to talk to him. To ask.

“Dang it!”

Tillie laughs. “Now what?”

“I’m stalking his bedroom based on the picture.”

She leaves the table to sit beside me. She just got in from the bar, so her slashed off-the-shoulder T-shirt smells of beer and fried food.

“Let me see. I’m a class A stalker.” She peers at the image. “He’s neat. This furniture is nice. And the cat is on a real bedspread. The bed ismade.” She nudges my shoulder. “You don’t even makeyourbed.”

“I can change.”

“Looks like he could make it for you.”

I nudge her back. “He insists he doesn’t date. We vixens ruin men.”

“He also insisted he didn’t adopt pets.”

I pet the kitten’s head on the screen. “She’s cute.”

“So what are you obsessing over in this picture otherwise?”

“The photograph on his dresser. He didn’t strike me as sentimental.”

Tillie peers at it, squinting her eyes. “The pants on everyone are colorful. I bet they’re scrubs. It’s his veterinary clinic staff.”

“On his dresser?” I lean in again. She’s probably right.

“Maybe opening day of his clinic or something. That’s kind of a big deal.”

That’s true. And not very helpful in learning more about him.
