“Looks good. Frolic has accepted him.”

Maria peeks into the nest. “Oh, good. That little girl is very attached already. She’s going to name him Harper.”

“Kit looks good. They don’t need to come back in other than for the spaying.”

“I told them.” Maria glances back into the treatment space. “I think I’ll go through the shutting down procedure and look in on the dog we had to splint.”

“I guess Sasha could stay here tonight, since the dog will be here and Betty will check in,” I say.

“After you gave her a warm, comfy spot last night?” Maria clucks her tongue. “Don’t be mean.”

I head for the door. “I’m going to process payroll. Can you give Frolic and Harper back to Lindsay once she’s done with the postbirth process?”

“Sure. They’re in the lobby.”

I nod. “Good. Let me know if you need me.”

“Will do, boss.”

Sasha sees me head into my office and makes her way down from her perch, hopping to a shelf, then a table, then the floor. She winds her way in and out of my feet as I walk.

I watch my legs so I don’t step on her. “Seems you’ve changed your tune since you hissed at me this time yesterday.”

Sasha pays my words no mind as I sit down. She hops onto my desk and spreads herself over my keyboard. Of course.

“I’m going to need that.”

She lays her furry white head on her paws.

I shake the mouse. I don’t need to type anything yet. I find the accountant’s files to approve. Most are direct deposit, so I check the amounts and send them on. There are also several vendor checks, so I send them to the printer and sign them manually.

Now for email. I open the list. Sasha is pressing on the space bar, so I scoot the keyboard out from under her. She opens one eye and scolds me with an aggressive meow.

“Sorry, Sasha. I have to work.”

She turns in a circle, presenting her tiny white butt to me, and settles in the space under the monitor.

Another day of mostly junk email that I can quickly delete.

Then Ensley.

I knew she’d written me back right away. I heard the notification before my phone went into do-not-disturb mode last night. But I hadn’t read it, and the morning went swiftly, as they do, my home routine and getting to the office.

I open it.

I have to admit, I’m jealous of Snowball. Not because she’s on your bed—ha, ha. Okay, maybe that, too. We have unfinished business, don’t you think?

But she’s all taken care of. My younger sister lives with me and just announced she’s moving to help our other sister. So now I have to find a roommate! I don’t guess Snowball has a friend ...

My body stirs at the idea of Ensley on my bed. We definitely have unfinished business on that score. But she’s in Alabama, a good three hours away. That’s pretty far for a hookup.

But the vision of her intrudes, lying on the cot, her hair a wild mass of curls. The open zipper revealing miles of skin. I can feel her in my hands.

Meow.

Sasha peers up at me, as if she’s sussed out that I’m thinking about some other female. “That reminds me,” I tell her. “You’re almost old enough to spay.”

Her blue eyes peer up at me as if daring me to say it again.
