“That’s right. Before the evil one took over the wedding.”

“Did you hear from Ronnie before they got on the boat?”

“She texted me from her limo saying she was devastated that I wasn’t there. But her dad did walk her down the aisle. They did it quickly while Felicia was changing. So that probablywasthe wedding march we heard through the wall.”

“I’m glad he walked her.”

Sasha has fallen asleep, one claw entangled in the plastic bag. I carefully pull it off and ball up the bag to avoid her suffocating in it.

“Is Sasha with you?”

“Sure.”

“Would it be too forward of me to ask you for a pussy pic?”

I laugh again. “It’s a pretty pussy.”

“Send it to me.”

I snap a quick shot of Sasha and send it through.

“Oh, look at her!” Ensley exclaims. “So beautiful. You adopted her?”

“Apparently.”

“But what about your work hours?”

“I take her with me. She’s got a spot on top of one of the cabinets. The other animals don’t even notice her.”

“I love it.”

I hear a beep of a text notification. It’s from Ensley, a photograph of Richard Nixon with meme text that says,Your Dick pic.

Another laugh escapes. “We got those out of the way.”

“Mm-hmm. I guess I could ask what you’re wearing.”

I glance down at my shirt and pants. Then I realize what she’s talking about. Phone sex clichés. So I say, “A red thong and matching pasties.”

“Oh my God!” Ensley’s choking laugh is so loud I have to hold my phone away. “Drew! You’re the worst! And the best! I love you!”

Interesting how easily those words spill out from her. I’m not sure I’ve ever said them aloud, not even to my parents.

But she goes on. “Oh no! I just said ‘I love you’! I’m so awkward!” I can practically see her slapping her hand over her mouth.

I have nothing to say. I can only grunt so that she knows I’m still there.

Her voice is squeaky. “I’ve set you back to your caveman vocabulary!”

“It’s fine.”

“I tell everybody I love them! Even my bank customers!”

“Even Janet?”

“You remember!” She sounds utterly astonished. “You were listening!”

“You were wearing coveralls by then. I could focus.” I shouldn’t have gone there, but I did.
