“Monday and Tuesday as usual. But I’m a short-timer now. Nobody expects me to play too nicely.”

A plan forms. “Do you have to work the late shift Sunday?”

“I don’t close. But I probably won’t be done till nine.”

“Is that too late to go to Lila’s?”

“I guess we could drive down that late. Makes more sense to go Monday morning, though. Don’t you have to work?”

“I think I could swing some time off. We have a floater who can go between the bank branches.”

Tillie shrugs. “Sure. We can head out Sunday night if you want. What’s this about?”

“Just wanted to go to Adamsville and see my sister.”

She narrows her eyes. “Never mind that Adamsville is close to Drew.”

“He seems like he could use some help Monday.”

“You’re going to work for him?”

“Maybe for the day.”

She wipes down the counter. “There are about a dozen ways this could go south.”

I shrug. “I’m a kindhearted girl helping a friend.”

She shakes her head, but a group of laughing women approach the bar, so she has to head over to get their orders.

Drew hasn’t typed anything since his last message.

Me:I hope it works out. Good night!

Drew:G’night.

Now to look up where his veterinary office is.

Chapter 16

DREW

I brace myself for a Monday morning of chaos. Friday was a surgery day with few regular appointments, so Jenny’s absence mattered a lot less.

But Mondays are always brutal, as many stressed-out pet owners will try to work their way into our schedule for whatever happened over the weekend.

I pull Vera from diagnostic to run the front desk. Our retired part-timer Betty will pop in for a couple of hours to manage prescriptions and handle phone inquiries.

I take over diagnostic plus handling all the emergency cases that come in. It feels like I’ve worked for hours, exhaustion already hitting when I look up and realize it’s only nine.

Vera approaches me cautiously at the surgical table. “Dr.Daniels, you have a visitor.”

I don’t even glance up from the fourteen-year-old cat I’m having to stitch up. Well into her golden years and still getting into fights. “If it’s some industry rep, tell them to come next week.”

“It’s a young woman, actually. Says she’s Ensley James.”

My head snaps up. Ensley’s here? In Atlanta?

“Put her in my office and tell her I’ll be there when I’m done with this suture. Fifteen minutes.”
