And some manners. But I keep that part to myself.

“I don’t eat sugar,” he says but picks up the coffee.

“Okay!” I snatch the doughnut and take a hefty bite.

“Hey! That was mine!”

Oh my God. “Drew! You said you don’t eat sugar.”

“I was being difficult.”

“You don’t have to tell me!” I walk around the desk. “Here.” I hold the doughnut near his mouth. “Eat something before you talk anymore. You obviously need some calories.”

“You already took a bite.”

“And you’ve already been all up in my saliva, if you recall.”

Drew glares at me. Sasha sniffs delicately at the doughnut.

He takes the doughnut from me, turning the side with my bite away from his mouth. His shoulders relax as his teeth sink in. “That’s good.”

“Exactly. And plenty more where that came from. There’s a dozen in the storage room on the break table.”

“You brought these?” He takes another bite.

Doesn’t eat sugar. What a crock.

“I did. I’ve enjoyed the challenge of the last two days, and I wanted to do something nice.”

He swallows. “We should do something for you.”

Now that he’s not roaring like a bear, I feel bold. “I agree. I say you take me to dinner tonight.”

He frowns. “I can’t do that.”

“Oh, I know. You’re my boss. But I have some things to discuss with you. So I insist.” This is great. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.

He finishes another bite before answering. “Why can’t we have the conversation here?”

“Because I’m saving your butt, you got me mostly naked less than two weeks ago, and you owe me!”

He sets down his doughnut. “All right. But please keep this between us.”

This is definitely progress. “Our secret is safe with me.”

And before my perfectly manifested future can get derailed, I head for the door.

Chapter 20

DREW

This woman is going to be the death of me. She brought me doughnuts, looking far too adorable for veterinary work.

And now she’s convinced me to take her to dinner even though she works for me.

It’s downright irritating the way she can make me go back on my convictions with a toss of her curly hair.

The whole situation has me thinking about the movieBambifrom my childhood. I never understood the whole twitterpated scene. I felt the same way about my friends as Bambi did, watching his skunk pal take off with some skunk girl. And then there were the birds fluttering around to pick up mates. Bambi wandered around the forest in confusion as they all took off, wondering what had gotten into everybody.
