Her voice is terse. “I’m not saying you have to come see me off, but are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“How was it?”

“It was something. The cat went missing. I’ll explain later.”

“Did you do the deed?”

“We didn’t.” I glance from the kitchen through to the living room. Drew is petting Sasha.

“What happened?”

“Sasha got lost, and we had to bathe her.”

“Who the hell is Sasha?”

“Drew’s cat.”

“Like our mother?”

“Yeah, he named the kitten after her.”

Tillie’s voice is strident. “How did that pussy get priority over yours?”

It’s a good question. “She got lost.”

Silence.

“I can get an Uber.”

“It’s too much.”

“Are you going to do the deed now?”

“He’s making me an omelet.”

“He cooks?”

“Yeah.”

“Then marry him.”

“Ha. Right, Tillie.”

“I’m serious.”

“I’ll be there to take you to the bus.”

I end the call.

Drew comes into the kitchen. I’m instantly distracted by his bare chest, his dress pants slung low on his hips. God, how did we not make something happen?

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah. Tillie was checking in.”

He sets Sasha on the floor. “Let me feed her and I’ll take you back.”
