“And then I could stay and work, too?”

“Well, I’d expect you to remain barefoot and pregnant—”

“Gabe!”

He laughs. “Yes, you could stay and work, too.”

“Okay. Let me try.”

“I love you, Tillie. I know it’s fast, but after not getting to talk to you for three days, I wished more than anything I’d have said it.”

My throat is so tight I can barely swallow. “I think I love you, too, Gabe. And if not, then I can always just have sex with you until something better comes along.”

He laughs so loud I have to pull my phone away from my ear.

“Consolation prize accepted. I should go. I need to call a fair number of people now that service is back. I wanted to talk to you first.”

“Thank you. Bye, Gabe. I think I love you.”

“Bye, Tillie. I know I love you.”

I hold the phone in my hand.

My life has changed.

Totally.

All the way.

But now, my sister.

I glance back at the bar. Badger hasn’t come for me yet.

I dial her number. It’s late, but she should still be up. Rosie is long past her bedtime.

Her voice is a question. “Why is my sister calling when a text will do?”

“Hey.”

“Hey. You okay?”

“Gabe called.”

“Oh. He’s okay, then?”

“His hut is gone.”

“What?”

“The hurricane took it.”

“Oh, Tillie. It was such a cute place.”

“It was.”

“What is he going to do?”

“A new fancy hotel bar is opening up, and his friend is making him the manager. He’s going to be running it and hiring the staff.”
