I sit on the sofa, and Tillie falls in place beside me.

“What did you all decide to do?” Lila asks.

Tillie glances at me. “We haven’t.”

Maybe this is my opportunity to reach out to Lila. “Did you have thoughts?” I ask her. “Tillie feels an ambush is best.”

Lila watches me for a moment, as if trying to decide if she wants to get involved. She rolls the ball to Rosie. “I guess I kind of agree. You could spend days waiting for a message that never comes.”

She’s right. “So, coffee shop?”

Tillie nods, squeezing my hand. “I’ll be there.”

“Did you get tonight off?” Lila asks. “Badger was being a dick about it.”

Tillie tugs on her shorts. “Nope. But I might no-show.”

I didn’t know about this. “You have to work?”

“Badger put me on the schedule even though I asked for tonight off.”

“I don’t mind being a barfly and watching you work.”

“You sure? He can’t fire me. He’s short-staffed already.”

“I’m sure. It’ll be fun watching you in your own space.”

“Just don’t punch anybody who comes on to me. It’s going to be all of them, and I can handle it.”

I chuckle. “I’ll leave them to you.”

We order Chinese takeout, and the evening moves on until it’s time for Tillie to work her shift.

I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but I know tonight is going to be awesome.

Chapter 29

TILLIE

“Why’s a fine filly like yourself working in a dump like this?”

The man, at least twice my age, leans against the counter. He reeks of cheap whiskey and cigars.

I glance down at the end of the bar, where Gabe has taken up residence. He looks amused, so I decide to have my usual fun.

“I’m waiting for some gorgeous hunk of love to come and rescue me and make me his.” I say this without a bit of irony as I pour two shots of tequila for one of the servers.

The man laughs, sending both a stream of smoke and a stronger stench of booze across the bar. “Then this is your lucky day. I might be in the mood for a lady for the night.”

I quickly mix a rum and Coke before I respond to that. “Well, that’s a disappointment. I was thinking of getting hitched in Vegas. I guess you’re not up for that.”

The man takes a step back. “Whoa, slow down, little lady.”

I set the drinks on the rubber mat so the server can grab them. Then I stare the man full in the face. “Aww, come on. Let’s get married. Then I’ll be all yours!”

“I think I hear my friend calling me.” He takes off across the room.

Gabe laughs so hard that he snorts his glass of water, and this makes me giggle. “I amuse you?”
