Page 4 of Rafe

The girl simply leaned into the bump and kept smiling at Gus.

There’s something different about her. She’s not like a regular, fearful Terran. She’s got a steel backbone in there.

Well, maybe not a steel backbone. She was as tiny and soft-looking as any Terran, especially compared to Rafe.

But her heart might be made of steel.

Her heart…

Now there was an idea.

Women didn’t like strange men coming on to them. And Rafe was huge and intimidating, with his muscles and his armor. Maybe if he flirted with her, he could knock her down a few pegs, and get her to call the agency and ask for a new guard.

Problem was, Rafe was kind of a natural at flirting. He’d never had to do it on command before.

He decided the first step was to make lots of eye contact. Thinking back to his conquests, he was sure that was part of it.

He glanced down at her again.

But she was still looking at the baby.

He cleared his throat loudly, and shifted back in his seat, so as to look cool and confident.

She finally looked up at him, and he gave her the cocky smolder that drove the girls at the bars near the base wild.

Her brow furrowed.

He almost broke, but managed to keep smoldering at her. Gods, but she was nice to look at, with that mess of pale hair and her piercing blue eyes. It was easy to tell her with his eyes that he wanted to see her clothing shredded on his floor, because it was the honest truth.

Mine, the dragon whispered.

He waited for her to blush and blink at him, like they usually did. But she just stared.

“You okay?” she asked him slowly, after a moment.

Could she really be unaffected by his smolder?

She lifted a delicate brow in question.

“Fine,” he snarled, dragging his eyes back to the empty tundra in front of them.

She didn’t say anything more. And when he glanced at her again, he saw that, unsurprisingly, she was devoting all her attention to the baby once more.

A flash of something like jealousy went through him, and he gave himself a shake, as if that could get his head on straight. He wasn’t a big brother losing the spotlight to the new baby. She was supposed to pay attention to the baby and ignore him.

Somehow, the innocent little Terran was taking on her new role perfectly, and it was Rafe who was all over the place.

He wasn’t ready to accept the dragon’s wild assertions, but it was clear that he was in over his head. Even now, with his eyes fixed on the horizon, all he could think about was how good she smelled.

He pictured her shrugging off the massive fur cloak and releasing her golden curls, and his body raged with need.

“What’s that?” she asked suddenly, pointing to the signpost they were approaching.

“It’s a sign for the train,” he told her.

“There’s a train on Sigg-3?” she asked.

“Don’t get your hopes up,” he told her. “It has three stops total, and none of them are very far from here. But one of them is close to your new home in the town.”
