“There’s something really nice about this,” Rafe murmured, echoing her own thoughts.

“It’s peaceful,” she agreed.

“Mah,” Gus added.

She laughed and kissed his pillowy soft cheek.

“Are you glad you’re a livestock farmer?” Rafe asked.

“I am,” she said. “I can’t wait to see baby deer all over that field.”

“What about in the house?” Rafe asked.

“What do you mean?” she asked in surprise. “We can’t let them in the house.”

“Well, not baby deer,” he said and cleared his throat.

“Are you talking about… our babies?” she asked.

“I think Gus would be a great big brother,” Rafe said. “He has a fine sense of humor.”

“I think so too,” she said softly, her heart expanding.

Rafe pulled her in close, pressing his lips to the top of her head. They stayed that way for a long time, joyous emotion flowing between them through their bond.

Jade’s mind flew to the future. Visions of Gus learning to walk, riding a stag-mount of his own, leading a little sibling by the hand, all rushed through her imagination.

“Bah,” Gus said suddenly, drawing her right back to the present.

“Sorry, baby,” she laughed. “I’m so used to envisioning all my happiness in the future. But I’m going to enjoy the right-now. The right-now is pretty amazing.”

“The right-now is perfect,” Rafe agreed, pulling her in again for a kiss that made her toes curl.
