"Oh, I was going to see if you wanted to go for a walk."

"I think I’m just gonna stay in tonight. I’m tired."

"Do you want me to grab some pizza and we can binge the new episodes ofMarried at First Sight?"

"Actually, I think I’m going to go to bed early."

Laura hated lying to her friend, and she knew that if she and Knox were going to have a torrid affair, she was going to have to come up with a reason why she wasn’t hanging out at night. One night, she could stay in and go to bed early with no suspicion being raised. Two or three nights and Kennedy would show up at her door and demand to know what was wrong with her.

"Are you okay?" There was genuine concern in Kennedy’s voice.

"I don’t know," Laura answered honestly.

"What’s wrong? Do you want me to come over?"

"No!" she exclaimed.

Kennedy’s eyes widened at Laura’s overreaction to the question. It was then that Laura knew there was no way she could keep up this charade. She couldn’t tell her family what she was doing, but she had to tell someone.

"I, um… I’m having company over tonight."

"Does this company happen to have a Y chromosome?" Kennedy’s brows wagged.

"Yes." Laura wasn’t sure where to start. So much had happened in the past few days. "Okay, so you remember the speed date thing?"

"It happened a week ago," Kennedy stated flatly.

"Right, well, Knox and I matched."

"Yeah, that’s not a surprise. People need welder’s goggles or they’d be blinded by the sparks that you two put off."

"Right, but we didn’t just match on the heartbeat and sniffing challenge. Our scores for the questionnaire were the most compatible match that any participant had ever had. Felicity thought we were a couple and had tried to rig the system or something."

"That’s…good, right?"

"No. It’s horrible."

"It is?"

"Yes. He doesn’t want to have kids or get married."

"Oh right!" Her expression turned sympathetic. "Sorry, I forgot."

"You forgot?"

"I mean, he’s really hot, and it’s hard to remember details like that," Kennedy teased.

Even though her friend was saying it as a joke, there was definitely truth in the statement.

"Anyway, Felicity said that we owed it to each other to go on at least one date. I wanted to just forget about it, but Knox showed up and asked me when I was available to go."

"I know that you’re saying that is a bad thing, but it’s really hard for me to feel sorry for you. I mean, there are much worse things than Knox Savage wanting to take you out on a date."

"I know, but I just think he’s not right for me. I don’t want to fall into his dicksand and then lose another five years of my life. Time is ticking. I’m not in my twenties anymore. If I’m going to do this, I need to do it now."

"Right, sorry." This time, Kennedy actually sounded sorry.

"Anyway, I figured the best way to scare him off was to show him just how much I want to be a mom, so for our date, I brought him to a sperm clinic."
