Page 49 of Crashing Into You

Part of him wanted to ask how, but something stopped him from asking. Probably because he wasn’t sure he wanted to hear the answer. Whatever his mom was picking up on, there was most likely some truth behind it. And that truth’s name was Kennedy Dawes.

Speaking of Kennedy, he pulled into the parking lot and saw her white SUV parked two stalls down. He’d been to Well Brook half a dozen times since the first day he’d met her and this was the only time he’d seen her car parked there.

His heart rate picked up at the thought of seeing her as they got out of the car and walked into the facility. If it was any other woman, he’d do his best to avoid her since he was with his mom. But, just like when he and Kennedy were driving to the hospital the day before, he wanted his mom to meet her.

After introducing his mom to Marlene and signing in, they headed toward the rehab room and he was coming up with excuses he could make for stopping by her grandma’s room when he saw that wouldn’t be necessary.

Kennedy was walking straight toward them.

He saw the moment she lifted her head and saw him. Her lips parted and she inhaled a short intake of breath as a flush rose on her cheeks. He loved that he could make her blush without even speaking.

He was momentarily mesmerized by just how beautiful she was. Her hair was pulled up in a ponytail and she didn’t have any makeup on. She was wearing black yoga pants and a white ribbed tank top that revealed just a sliver of skin on her waist and hugged her hourglass figure.

“Hi,” she said as she lifted her hand in the cute, slightly awkward way that made him think she was the most adorable thing in the world.

“Hey,” he smiled.

“Seb, are you going to introduce me to your friend?” his mom prompted.

Seb blinked and realized he’d totally forgotten his mom was there. Kennedy must not have noticed that he was with anyone either, because she looked just as surprised.

“Mom, this is Kennedy. Kennedy this is my mom, Elaine.”

“Oh, nice to meet you again, Mrs. Savage. I mean, in person this time. We talked on the phone yesterday when I sneezed, so we sort of met then, but that doesn’t really count.”

Seb couldn’t help but smile at her rambling. He wondered if she was nervous because they’d spent the night together, or if it was because of meeting his mom after they’d spent the night together.

“It’s so nice to meet you face to face. You are stunning.”

“Thank you, so are you!” Kennedy replied sincerely.

“No, I mean you are truly beautiful. Isn’t she beautiful, Seb?”

“Yes, she is,” he easily agreed.

“Oh…” Kennedy waved her hand dismissively and shook her head. “Well, I’m actually running late. But it was so nice to meet you, Mrs. Savage.”

“Elaine, call me Elaine,” his mom corrected her.

“Okay, Elaine.” Kennedy nodded then her eyes met Seb’s again. “And it was nice seeing you again.”

“You too,” he smiled.

She waved again as she walked past him, and his mom hooked her arm through his and patted his forearm as they continued down the hallway. “Yep, I was right.”

He looked down at her. “In general or are you referring to something specific?”

“Both, but specifically I was referring to what I said in the car. You are going to be just fine.”

Kennedy tooka deep breath as she walked into the hospital to see her friend and officially meet Jasmine and Jackson. She wasn’t sure if the anxiety she was feeling was because she was back at the hospital or if she was still feeling a little shaky after meeting Mrs. Savage. She’d only had a few one-night-stands in her life and they’d all been in her early twenties.

Never, not once, had she run into the mother of a one-night-stand the following day. But this was Whisper Lake. Her best friend had just given birth to Seb’s niece and nephew. Of course, she was going to run into him and his family.

She truly hadn’t thought this through.

Last night, she just wanted to be with Seb. She’d briefly considered the emotional repercussions and decided after a quick risk vs. reward breakdown, that it was worth it. But she hadn’t factored into the equation awkward run-ins.
