Page 58 of Crashing Into You

Aiden had asked Laura for Kennedy’s number. Her friend had texted her and asked if she could pass it along.

“Yeah, he did.”

Laura’s eyes lit up. “And?”

“I haven’t called him back.”

Laura’s eyes narrowed and she tilted her head to the side. “What’s going on with you?”

“What? Nothing.” Kennedy shook her head.

“No. There’sdefinitelysomething up with you. I know that I’ve been out of the loop, but something is going on with you. You’ve been acting weird since…”

Kennedy would normally tell her friend everything, but she was not going to tell her that she had feelings for Seb. The last thing she wanted was for things to be weird whenever he was around. Or for her friend to push for a relationship.

Seb had made it clear that he wasn’t in the right head space for anything, and for once in her life, Kennedy wasn’t going to romanticize the situation.

“I’m fine, really. I’ve just had a lot on my mind with Nana.”

The door to the bedroom opened and Leti stuck her head in. “Elaine, Seb, Ford, and Chrissy are here.”

As if on cue Jasmine started stirring in her bed, followed by Jackson in his.

“Oh, okay. We’ll be right out.”

“I actually have to go,” Kennedy told Laura. As much as Kennedy had missed Seb, she knew that spending more time with him would only make what she was feeling worse.

“You do?” Laura questioned. “Why? I thought you could stay for dinner.”

“No, I, um, I have that Zoom call, remember?”

“Oh, right. Okay, well love you.” Kennedy had totally forgotten about the Zoom call, but she was glad to have an out.

Kennedy gave Laura a hug as Knox was coming in to check on his wife and twins. She passed Ford and Chrissy on her way out, but thankfully Seb and his mom were in the kitchen, so she didn’t have to see him.

As soon as she shut the front door, relief that she’d gotten out without having to have an awkward interaction with him where all she would be thinking about was,why are you avoiding me again, washed over her.

Kennedy was halfway to her car when she heard her name being called.

She turned and saw Elaine rushing toward her. Had she left her purse or her phone? She looked down to check, thinking that was the only reason the woman would be chasing after her, but she had both.

“Hi,” Kennedy smiled as Elaine approached her.

Seb’s mom leaned toward her and spoke in a conspiratorial manner. “A little birdie told me something.”

Thoughts raced through Kennedy’s mind like cars in a NASCAR race. Did she know something about her and Seb? If she did, what was she about to say? Was she going to ask her what her intentions with her son were?

“What?”

“That you are in real estate.”

“Oh.” A second wave of relief washed over Kennedy. “Yes, I am.”

“Great. I was wondering if you could show me some properties but keep it quiet.”

“Keep it quiet?” Kennedy repeated, not sure what the secrecy was about.

First the wedding. Then spending the night with Seb. Now this. Her life was filling up with secrets.
