He knew his mom wanted to play matchmaker, but he didn’t want her wasting Kennedy’s time to do it.

“Yes, I’m moving to Whisper Lake, but don’t tell your brothers or Keaton, it’s a surprise.” She smiled as her phone rang. When she looked down her face lit up. “Oh, I have to take this. Excuse me one second.”

His mom walked down the sidewalk to a landing that overlooked the lake and answered the call.

He glanced over at Kennedy and his lips curled in a grin, “Another secret.”

Her eyes widened. “That’s what I thought when she said that yesterday.”

“We must be very trustworthy.”

“Yeah, I guess so. Two secrets.”

“Three,” he corrected her.

“Three?” Kennedy’s brows knitted together.

“This one, Knox and Laura’s and the night we spent together.”

“Oh right.” A flush filled her cheeks as she licked her lips nervously. The head that sat above his shoulders knew that it was just a nervous gesture, but the one below his belt had other ideas. Ones that included tasting that tongue once again.

“Okay, I’m ready,” his mom announced as she joined them once again.

“Oh, great.” Kennedy’s eyes bounced between his mom’s and his. “Did you want to hop in with me, or I can give you the addresses and meet you there.”

“I’ll drive.” His mom didn’t know that he had issues with other people driving and he didn’t want her to. Any issues he had, she took it upon herself to ‘fix.’

He walked to the passenger seat and opened the door for his mom. He would have opened the door for Kennedy but she’d already climbed into the backseat behind the driver’s side.

Kennedy gave him the directions to the first house, which were pretty straight forward. Most places were easy to get to in Whisper Lake.

“So, Kennedy,” his mom shifted in her seat so she was looking back at Kennedy. “Laura tells me that you might be going on a reality dating show.”

“Oh, um, yes, I might.”

“She said that you had a Zoom call about it last night, How did it go?”

He glanced up in the rearview mirror and saw that Kennedy looked nervous. He wasn’t sure if it was because she didn’t like answering personal questions about herself, or if the call had gone well and she didn’t want to say so in front of him.

The chivalrous thing to do would be to divert the conversation in another direction, but he wasn’t feeling particularly chivalrous at the moment. He wanted to know how it had gone.

“Um, good I think. They were really nice.”

“That would be so exciting, if you got to go on.”

“What are you looking for, in a partner, I mean?”

“Mom.” Seb knew his warning tone wouldn’t stop his mom from pursuing that line of questioning, but he couldn’t just sit by while Kennedy was being grilled.

“What?” His mom lifted her hands in mock surrender. “I’m just wondering if she’s looking for something serious. These days, I don’t know what you kids are doing.”

Seb found it funny that his mom still referred to him, his brothers, and Keaton as kids. They were all in their late thirties and forties.

“Um, you know, I’m just, you know, looking for a nice guy.” Kennedy’s eyes met his in the rearview, but then she immediately looked away.

“Have you tried dating apps?”

“Mom.” Again, Seb knew that his protests would be ignored, but he had to try.
