Page 67 of Crashing Into You

“No one knows. No one asks,” Ali quietly explained.

“It’s like Fight Club. We don’t talk about fight club,” Jess said barely above a whisper.

“Do you have pictures of the babies?” Brynn whisper-mouthed.

“I do.” Laura had shared a bunch of pictures Seb had taken of the twins. Kennedy hadn’t even known that he was a photographer too.

She pulled out her phone and passed it around the group. There was the appropriate silent ooing and awwing as all the women quietly gushed over how adorable the twins were and how good Laura looked.

“Who took these?” Jess asked, when she got the phone.

“Sebastian.” Kennedy hoped that she’d be able to say his name sounding totally neutral. If these women sniffed out any interest on her part, it would spread through town like wildfire.

It’s not that she was embarrassed about how she felt about Seb or the fact that they’d spent two nights together. It was just that she didn’t want to field the questions about what was going on between them.

He didn’t live in town, so once he left, the chatter would die down. But then every time he came to visit it would start back up again. Case in point, she’d dated Ali’s husband Kade McKnight twenty years ago in high school, and people still asked her how she felt about the two of them being married.

In a small town, the soap opera of everyone’s love life, or in her case, lack of a love life was prime gossip material.

“So what is the deal with him?” Jess asked as she passed the phone along to Sara.

“The deal?”

“Yeah, he’s hot, obviously, and crazy talented.”

“Oh, did you guys see him on Tattoo Master?” Liv asked.

Some of the women had seen the show, others hadn’t. Kennedy had watched every episode of the reality show that he’d been a judge on. She’d also viewed every YouTube video she’d been able to find of him. It was starting to border on obsessive behavior, but she couldn’t help herself.

“So what’s he like?” Jessa asked again. “I can’t get a read on him.”

That made two of them. When they were together, Kennedy felt like he might return the feelings that she had for him. But then, he’d basically ghost her. Last night had been amazing, but she would bet money if he would have seen her in town today, he probably would have avoided her.

“He seems nice,” Kennedy said, hoping that her response didn’t give away just how nice he’d felt buried inside of her last night.

Kennedy began to do her cross stitch when her phone buzzed in her purse. She set down her needles and grabbed it. When she saw the number, she almost ignored it, but forced herself not to.

Kennedy quickly made her way out of the room and into the hallway and answered.

“Hello,” she was slightly out of breath. She hadn’t realized she’d been holding her breath as she went through the room trying to be quiet.

“Hi, this is Maura.”

“Hi, Maura.”

“I just wanted to let you know that you’ve made it to the final round of casting for Fairytale Love. Over the next few weeks, you’ll have your final audition. Then, if everything goes well, in about a month or so you’ll need to complete a physical and psychological screening.”

“Okay,” Kennedy said, thinking that sounded like a lot of hassle to go through for something that she wasn’t even sure she wanted to do.

“Oh and also, from this point on, we are asking all potential talent to stop dating. If you’re seeing anyone this close to production, it just makes things…messy. It’s better to go into this with a clean slate.”

“Clean slate,” Kennedy repeated.

“We’ll be in touch for the next steps. Congratulations for making it this far!”

“Thanks.”

Kennedy hung up the phone and had a sick feeling in her stomach. She wished that she was more excited about the news. Instead, all she could think about was Seb. She’d just agreed not to see anyone. And she always followed rules.
