Too damn much

You’re not the one

Who stole my heart

But something’s been there

Right from the start.

They spoke to me as if they’d been written just for me, and I didn’t understand when or why or how. Had he just written this recently? Was it about me or was it a coincidence? Song lyrics could mean anything or be about almost anyone. That was done by design. But Carter had specifically suggested this song, and Zeke had been hesitant. That had to mean something.

I wanted to write out the feelings it evoked in me, but I was too enthralled watching and listening to risk missing anything. I’d seen Zeke play online dozens of times, but being this close was enchanting. Knowing him the way I did now changed everything about the way I looked at him. Millions of fans all over the world lusted over him, but very few knew him intimately. The man behind Big Z the guitar player was so much more complex than his professional persona.

And it was beautiful to be able to mesh the two. The huge star and the simple man beneath. The self-assured musician and the tender, patient father. The friend and the lover. It was only now that I recognized just how multi-faceted he was, and in how many directions he was pulled on a daily basis. When we were together, though it had technically been just a few weeks total, it was easy to forget he was a rockstar. Not just any rockstar, but one of the biggest in the world.

Watching him now took my breath away.

No wonder women threw themselves at musicians.

If he wasn’t already my boyfriend, I would’ve had to consider trying to seduce him. It was that simple.

They played two more songs, both of which had me moving to the beat. They were so freakin’ talented, and the new album was going to be huge. I didn’t need to know anything about the inner workings of the industry to know that. It was instinctive; you knew a hit when you heard it and they’d just played a couple of them.

“What do you think?” Carter asked when they were done.

“It’s amazing,” I said. “Seriously some of your best stuff to date. ‘Destiny and Dust’ is going to be the single, right?”

They all looked at each other and burst out laughing.

“She’s got our number,” Kingston said. “And yeah, that was our thought, though we’ve still got two more songs to record.”

“We done for the day?” Kellan asked. “It’s date night, and Didi’s gonna be pissed if I’m late.”

“See you tomorrow!” Kingston told him.

“Nice to meet you, Presley!” Kellan waved and within a few minutes, everyone was gone except Zeke, Carter, and me.

“Chinese or Italian?” Zeke asked me.

“I don’t care. You guys worked hard today, so you pick.”

“Chinese,” Carter said.

“Italian,” Zeke said at the same time.

They both looked at me and in unison said, “Tie breaker.”

We all laughed.

“Fine. Let’s do Chinese.”

Zeke placed the order while Carter and I settled on two chairs in the lounge.

“How do you want to do this?” Carter asked me. “You have a list of questions?”

“I have notes on my phone, but let’s make it a conversation,” I said. “It’s more comfortable that way.”

“Sure. Fire away.”
