“I’m glad.” He kissed the tip of my nose and lifted his head. “Should we shower? Our guests will be arriving any minute now.”

I tugged him back down so our torsos were touching again. “Just a little longer,” I whispered. “I love how it feels, when we’re connected like this.”

“Me too.”

We didn’t move for a long time, until finally the noise coming from downstairs told us our magic moment had to end.

“Tonight,” he whispered. “When everyone is gone, we’ll be just like this again.”

“But it won’t be the second first time.” I met his gaze, silently imploring him to understand because it was a little embarrassing to express all the emotions I’d been experiencing lately.

“Ah.” He nodded solemnly. “A new beginning for us.”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Then they can wait.” He paused. “Am I heavy?”

“I like it. I’m not sure what it is, but in addition to how sexy it is, I feel safe like this with you.”

“I like that you feel safe. I hope I can always make you feel safe.”

“I’d like that. It’s been a long time since I felt that way. Most of my life has been filled with uncertainty and different levels of fear. Not the horrible kind of fear from abuse or anything like that, but when you don’t know how you’ll pay the bills, it’s a constant, subconscious fear. Adding a baby to the mix, I can’t explain how terrifying it is to worry about making sure your child will have everything he needs.”

“You will never, ever have to worry about that again,” he said softly.

“Being with you comes with a whole new set of worries,” I admitted. “Totally different, and some are kind of selfish, but if we’re being honest, I have to mention them.”

“Tell me.”

“What happens when you go back out on tour? I can’t always go with you. Jeremy can’t grow up on tour. He’ll have to go to school and have some semblance of a normal life. If you’re touring for two years straight, what happens with our family?”

“I don’t have specific answers for you, but we’re not doing that anymore. After the last tour ended, we had a conversation about building in breaks. We have to, for everyone’s sanity. Now that I have a family, I’m going to be strict about it. Yes, we’ll be apart some when we tour, but we’ll do the fun places, like Europe, in the summer, so you and Jeremy can come with me. I’ll make sure I can fly home for a week or two at a time every couple of months. It won’t be easy, but we can make it work if you’re willing to try.”

“I’m here, aren’t I?”

“You are.”

“Zeke?” Fatima’s voice filtered through the door. “Are you still in the shower? Your guests are arriving!”

“A few more minutes, Ma!” he yelled.

Our eyes met, and we stifled our laughter.

“I guess cuddle time is over,” I said.

“Later,” he whispered. “We’ll continue this later.”

It took us a little while to get downstairs. Maybe more than just a little while. Between showering, where another couple of orgasms had been involved, Presley needing to dry her hair and put on makeup, and then Jeremy waking up, we were very, very late. The only person who seemed to notice was Meg, though, because her eyes twinkled as she called out to us. Or maybe that was because she was on Carter’s lap.

I had no idea what had happened for the two of them to already be besties—or God forbid, something else—but it was kind of funny. The look on Presley’s face was a ridiculous combination of humor and horror, and she blinked a few times before looking up at me.

“I warned you they would be trouble.”

“You don’t think…” Her voice trailed, as if she couldn’t quite bring herself to say the words.
