“You could be right.” Ford nodded.

“Head’s up,” Tommy said under his breath, nudging me.

I followed his gaze and groaned. “Oh, who the fuck let him back here?”

“Who?” Devyn was smart enough not to turn around and look, keeping her eyes on mine instead.

“This guy I’ve known since middle school. He’s a total douche.”

“They have history,” Tommy stage whispered.

“He plays guitar, not bass, but actually had the audacity to send in a tape when we were auditioning.”

“Really?” Devyn’s eyes widened. “What’s his name? So I know who to look out for.”

“Larry Hanks.”

“Wh-what?” She stared at me. “Where?” Now she turned, scanning the room. “Oh, fuck me. No.”

“What’s wrong?” I instinctively moved closer to her. “Do you know him?”

“Yes.” She clenched her jaw.

Just then, Larry spotted her, and a smarmy smile broke out on his face as he came toward us.

“Well, hey, Dev.” He reached out to hug her but she took a step back.

Interesting.

“What are you doing here, Larry?” she asked in an icy voice.

“Well, seeing how you stole the job right out from under me, I wanted to see what you have that I don’t. Other than the obvious.”

“How do you two know each other?” I asked, eyeing him.

Larry grinned. “We go way back. Didn’t you tell him, Dev? We played in a band together in Boston.”

“It was a long time ago,” Devyn said, her face tight with what could only be described as annoyance.

“Not that long, baby doll.”

“I have nothing to say to you, Larry.”

“What, too good for your old friends now that you’re in the big leagues?”

“Not at all,” she replied. “But you and I aren’t friends.”

“We were more than friends once upon a time.” He winked, and I wanted to throat punch him.

“Once upon a time was years ago. Now, if you’ll excuse me—” She started to walk away, but Larry reached for her arm.

“Come on, Dev. Don’t be that way.”

She wrenched her arm free. “Knock it off. You want to see what happens when you hit the big time?”

“What’s that?” he asked, folding his arms across his chest.

She met my gaze, and I gave her a little nod, because I knew exactly what she was going to do.
