Jesse threw a pillow at me.

“He’s a lot of fun,” Kingston said. “And while he can absolutely be a dog, it’s mostly an act, part of his rockstar persona. One-on-one, he’s a great guy. Smart, educated, and funny. He was going to be an astrophysicist before the band took off.”

Jesse gaped, clutching her hands against her chest. “Dear Lord, will he marry me? I’m already in love. That much hotness with a brain?”

“And a big dick,” Kingston deadpanned.

“Kingston!” I playfully smacked him.

“What? I’ve seen it. It’s bigger than mine.”

Jesse fanned herself. “Yes, yes, yes. I’m in. Dinner. Sex. Whatever’s on Kellan’s menu, I’m partaking.”

So much for girls’ night.

We spent two hours at Macy’s, and Kingston had the limo he’d hired pick us up right outside. It was certainly fun living this lifestyle and we slid into the long, elegant vehicle, happy to put our bags down.

“Jesus, do you not have clothes?” Kellan demanded of me.

“Shush. I don’t get to New York often and that is the Macy of all Macy’s.”

“I guess.” He started to peek into one of Jesse’s bags. “Any lingerie in there?”

“Maybe.” She shrugged as if she couldn’t have cared less about him.

“Oooh.” He dug in, pulling out a pair of workout leggings. “This is disappointing.” A matching sports bra came next, and he wrinkled his nose. “You and I have very different ideas about what lingerie consists of.”

She leaned and over whispered something that made him laugh. “Well, okay then. I can wait.” He stuffed the clothes back in the bag and slid his arm around her shoulders.

Well, this sucked. Because now they were together, but Kingston and I had to pretend we weren’t.

And I was the one who’d come up with that rule.

“Oh, come on, knock it off.” Kellan gave us a look. “There’s zero chance you two aren’t fucking like bunnies. You’d have to be completely, legally blind not to see the way you look at each other. I get not wanting the word to get out at this early stage, but you don’t have to pretend in front of me. I’m not going to tell anyone. And Jesse must know.” He glanced at her.

Her cheeks turned pink as she looked at me and I just sighed as my gaze drifted to Kingston.

He didn’t say anything, but a smile quirked his lips and he reached for my hand.

“There you go.” Kellan shook his head. “Man, people get so uptight about shit.”

“You’re not a woman,” I pointed out. “It’s different for us. When the word gets out, whether it’s tomorrow or next year or in five years, fucking Kingston will be the only reason you hired me. The truth that we’d never met before my audition won’t matter.”

He scowled. “I know, but does it matter? You think we’re going to sell less records because maybe one percent of our fan base thinks you’re a slut? And I apologize for saying it that way, but you know the point I’m trying to make.”

I wasn’t going to get into the power issue conversation during our date night, so I didn’t respond, letting Kingston answer instead.

“The nuances are more complicated than that,” he said. “It’s not fair, and I’m hoping we get past it once she’s been in the band for a while. Whether she’s with me or someone else, I’d like her to be judged for her music, not her sex life.”

“It’s probably better if we’re not all over each other at the restaurant,” Jesse said to him. “That way, it looks like four friends out for a meal. Can you behave until we’re alone?”

He leaned over and kissed her, so I didn’t know if that meant he could or couldn’t.

“It’s going to be okay,” Kingston whispered to me. “The guys would never do anything to hurt either of us. We’re a family. I know you’re not there yet in the trust department, but we have to start somewhere, right?”

I nodded, my eyes locked with his.
