“Thanks.”

“You’re really lucky to have one of those because that’s not just any stone.”

“It’s not?”

“Nope. That’s a good luck stone. The person who looks after it will always have a little luck on their side.”

“Wow,” he whispers, looking at the stone like it’s magic.

“But remember, it only works if you’re kind and you listen to your mom. Only heroes find lucky stones.”

He puffs up his chest. “I’m like my dad, strong and brave.”

“All the best heroes are.” I nod.

He looks at me suspiciously for a minute before narrowing his eyes. “Are you a hero too?”

“Of course, that’s how I recognized the stone.” I look at his mom and grin when she hides her smile behind her hand.

“You don’t look like a hero.”

“What does a hero look like?”

He purses his lips as he thinks.

“Want me to tell you?” He nods. “A hero looks like you and me. A hero looks like all of us because we all have the potential to be heroes. Heroes are measured by the size of their hearts, not by a fancy weapon or a shiny cape.”

“I guess. I would like a cape, though.”

I chuckle. “Me too, but like I said, it doesn’t make you a hero. What’s inside does.”

I can tell he’s still skeptical.

“Of course, it helps that I’m actually a robot sent from the future.”

I yank up the legs of my pants, revealing the metal prosthetics I’m wearing today that a friend of mine spray painted in a variety of rainbow colors.

“Oh wow, you are a robot,” he whispers in awe.

My cell rings just then, so I let go of my pants and pull my phone from my pocket and see that it’s Nico calling. “I’ve gotta take this. It was nice to meet you, Sam. Be good for your mom.”

“Bye, RoboJinx.”

His mom cringes at the nickname, but I just laugh.

“Thank you for helping before. I appreciate it.”

“It was no problem.” I wave and walk away so I can answer.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Got a jumper.”

“Alright, I’m heading back to the car. Want to meet at my place or yours?”

“Come over here. Rex is grilling.”

“You don’t need to tell me twice. I’m on my way.”
