The cashier pops her gum and looks at my cut before her eyes drop to the pregnancy tests. She smirks, which has me narrowing my eyes at her. I can see Mercy fidgeting as she waits for her to say something, so I jump in and beat her to it.

“Can you hold on a sec? I forgot something.”

Before she can tell me no, I make my way around the store and grab a few items before returning to the checkout. There is quite a line when I return, and I can see people are getting a little pissed, but I ignore them and place my items down one by one. An extra-large bottle of lube, a cucumber, an eggplant, a roll of duct tape, a can of whipped cream, and a bottle of tequila.

The cashier’s eyes pop out of her head, and her cheeks flush. Mercy’s pregnancy tests are forgotten as she hurries to scan the items. Mercy covers her mouth to hide her laugh when I tell the cashier to make it quick because we have a busy night planned. Someone in the line laughs while others whisper, but I don’t care. Mercy is smiling and relaxed again, so my job is done.

“That will be fifty-nine dollars.”

“You know, pregnancy tests sure are expensive. I don’t know why people don’t just wait. You’re going to find out one way or another in nine months,” I joke as Mercy pays and I grab the bag. We walk out of the pharmacy section to the front of the store, where the restrooms are.

“Here? You want me to take my test here in Walmart?”

“It’s not like I want you to have your baby here. Though I have heard they give you free diapers or something for life.”

“Why would you want diapers for life? Surely, a couple of years would be enough.”

“You say that now, but just you wait. One day you’ll sneeze, and you’ll wish you were wearing a diaper.”

She hits me in the chest with the back of her hand before cursing. “Ow, what the fuck?”

I chuckle. “I’m wearing my vest. Maybe next time, aim for my arm, not my boobs. Now stop stalling and go pee.”

Someone coughs behind us. I turn and recognize the man that was behind us in line at the checkout. He looks between us both and walks away.

“I’d love to know what he’s thinking right now.”

I laugh as I push her into the restroom and take a spot near the sinks to rummage through the bags and find the tests. I hand her the tests, which she takes before hurrying to the nearest toilet.

“I don’t know if I have enough pee for all these.”

“So just do one for now. You can always do the rest of them later.”

“Yeah, good point.” She slides the tests she doesn’t want to use under the door, so I grab them and shove them back in the bag.

“So, what’s going on with you, Knight, Splinter, and Eightball?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Liar. You disappeared with them the day you were shot. Then the next day, you’re suddenly a prospect, and Knight, Eightball, and Splinter are looking at you like you betrayed them somehow.”

“We slept together. Then Nico and Rex turned up, and my kitchen ended up looking like a scene from the OK Corral.”

“Oh, boy.” She flushes and opens the door, tossing the pregnancy test at me.

I catch it against my chest and glare at her. “Thanks. Remind me to pee on something, throw it at you, and see how you like it.”

I place it on the counter and wash my hands as she dries hers and leans against the wall.

“I saw you with them that morning when you went toe to toe with Tiny.”

“And then Scope announced that I was the new prospect. I can’t even be mad at them. For all its changes, the Chaos Demons are very much old school. I knew it wouldn’t go down well. Maybe that’s why I didn’t tell them. I knew they wouldn’t like it. They would either try to talk me out of it or put their foot down and flat out tell me no.”

“They have to know you’re not the kind of woman who would stand for that.”

“I’m sure they figured that out within moments of meeting me.”

She’s quiet for a minute before she looks at me. “You didn’t want them to give you an ultimatum. You liked them and didn’t want them to disappoint you, so you made sure it played out so that they could be mad at you for a justifiable reason, like not talking to them first. That way, you can pretend that their anger isn’t about you being a prospect but about you hiding it from them.”
