“Let me guess. A knife was involved.”

“No, it was an earring. The right pieces of jewelry can double as weapons. I told him to keep his dick off my ass. When he didn’t, I pushed it away.” She shrugged and then moved to the cot across from me.

To end up in jail for something like that meant the guy was somebody in the upper echelon of NYC.

“Who’d you stab?”

“Nickoli Dominik.”

I gaped at her. “You’re kidding me. You do realize who he is, don’t you?”

He was the head of one of the Russian syndicates that ran a better part of New England.

“No, I’m not kidding. That is what I did. And yes, I know him. Nikki deserved it.” She followed up in a string of Russian I couldn’t follow, but I assumed they were curses.

I cocked my head to the side, taking her in, and then it dawned on me. She’d said, Nikki.

Holy fuck.

“You’re Oliana Dominik.” I gaped at her. “You stabbed your own husband?”

What was happening in my life right now? I wasn’t sure whether I should cry or freak out. A mob boss’s wife was in a cell with me.

“Yes. Nikki pissed me off. He ordered me to give him another baby. I give him five. That is enough.” She stomped her foot. “I don’t like being pregnant. No more babies.”

“So you sliced his balls with your earring in the middle of a club?”

“It’s my club. I do what I want.”

“How did you end up here?”

She sighed. “Nikki tells me to come here to calm down. He believes I’m nicer once I visit with people here. He thinks if I remember life back home, I will be sweet to him again.”

“So you’re here by choice.”

She nodded. “This is cleaner than where I met Nikki. But it reminds me of where we fell in love.”

“I’m not following. You met him in prison.” I frowned.

“I was a guard.” She grinned. “He’s sexy. I help him leave. So when I’m mad at him, I come here to remember.”

“It doesn’t work that way in the US. They don’t arrest you so that you can reminisce about your love life.”

“Of course they do. It happens all the time. It is all about who you know and how much money is in your bank account.” She shook her head at me as if I was so naïve. “Besides, our people have ways of making things happen when others deny us. Just as you Morellis do.”

“You know who I am?”

“Da. I saw you walk the runway in the dress with sapphire and diamond bikini under it. Someone bought it before I could.” A flash of annoyance crossed her features before she shrugged. “I’ll have her make a custom one for me. Nikki likes emeralds.”

“I guess you aren’t mad at him anymore if you plan to wear lingerie for him.”

“There is no end for Nikki and me unless we go together. Those are the rules.”

For a split second, my mind drifted to Damon, his intensity, his possessiveness.

If I ever made it out of here, how were things going to be with us? Would those same rules Oliana spoke of apply to us?

Instead of letting myself spiral in my thoughts, I asked, “So what happens if one of you breaks the rules? Like if he cheats or you do.”
