As part of the building code, the city required multiple emergency exit points for my penthouse. The one leading to the fitness center happened to be one of them, and for security purposes, I keep it locked at all times. The only way to access it was with an electronic code or a physical key.

How the fuck could she have known about the stairwell, and who gave her the way in and out of it?

Well, I guessed I’d find out soon enough.

Deciding to leave the lights off, I propped a shoulder against the wall and waited for her to enter.

Not five minutes later, Sophia cracked open the door and tiptoed, shoeless, into the hallway. She wore the signature red wig she liked to don whenever going incognito. She carried her sneakers in one hand while the other held her favorite shoulder bag.

She set the items she carried on the floor, closed the door, and then pulled out a device from the side zipper pocket of her pants. She pressed it against a groove along the side of the keypad, and a second later, the locks on the door engaged.

“So that’s how you circumvented my security.”

Sophia froze, and a tremor shook her hand as she removed the object from the security panel.

“Mind if I have a look at that?”

“Yes. It belongs to a friend that will want it back.”

“That’s too bad.” I stepped up behind her, crowding her against the door, and plucked it from her fingers before she realized what I had planned.

“Give it back to me. It isn’t mine.”

“What’s the saying? Finders keepers.” I leaned harder against her, sandwiching her between my body and the door.

“You didn’t find anything,” she gritted out. “You stole it.”

“Wrong. I found it on you, and since you’re mine, everything on you belongs to me.”

“That logic is absurd.”

“It seems I’m the furthest thing from logical when it comes to you.”

“Still not following.”

“I’m not going to ask you where you went tonight.”

“Why not?”

“Because I already know you won’t tell me.”

She dropped her forehead against the door. “I want to. You don’t know how badly I want to.”

“I didn’t ask. Therefore, it doesn’t matter, does it?”

“I’m sorry.”

I pushed away from her. “Not good enough.”

This woman drove me insane and nudged me to a limit that set me on the edge of being out of control. As her Dom, the last thing I could allow myself was to lose my discipline, my hold on the situation around us.

It was my responsibility to keep her safe, and she refused to let me do my job.

Maybe Lucian was right, I couldn’t offer her what she needed, and I wasn’t the right man for her. Nothing I seemed to do broke down the barrier between her secrets and me.

I picked up her things, turned, and headed toward the kitchen.

I’d barely taken a few steps when I heard her say.
