The man with the gun came closer. He took hold of my chin and forced my head up to look at him.

“Calm down,” he said, so close I could follow his lips loud and clear even with my vision blurred by tears. “I don’t intend to shoot you.”

I stopped struggling, looking back and forth between his lips and his eyes. They were hazel, maybe, or brown, so pale they almost looked amber.

“Why not?” I forced the words out past dry lips, oblivious to my volume control.

The men who’d killed my parents had left me alive, but I think that was because it amused them to let me live after snuffing out my whole world. This man had no reason to let me walk away.

He dropped his hand, and the man holding me from behind loosened his grip, though he didn’t let go entirely.

“What’s your name?” the amber-eyed man asked, ignoring my question.

“Why?” There was an angle here; there had to be.

The corners of his full lips twitched up in a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Because when someone walks in on me and sees something they shouldn’t see, I like to have a name to go with the face.”

“Heidi,” I said, trying not to spit it at him like a curse.

He nodded cordially. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Heidi. I wish we were meeting under better circumstances. My name is Amadeo Luciano.”

Chapter Three

Amadeo

Vito Agossi looked at me from where he held the dark-haired—and vivacious and mouthy—beauty. His bald head caught the light from above, turning him into a beacon towering over her.

“What do you want to do here, boss?” his eyes asked silently.

Good question. Fuck if I had an answer.

As far as complications went, this one was the hottest I’d ever come across by far. It was a complication, nonetheless. And the few choice solutions that came to mind weren’t going to happen unless I’d somehow stepped into the land of every man’s fantasy in the past thirty seconds.

“Take care of the body,” I told Vito. “I’ll take care of the girl.”

Not that I had the slightest clue what I was going to do with her.

Vito nodded and let go of the woman.

She took two skittering steps sideways, then looked at me, her chin tilted up now, feigning a confidence that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“What do you mean you’re ‘going to take care of the girl’?” she snapped.

What she lacked in confidence, she more than made up for in defiance. Too much defiance. Too much determination to resist what had to happen here.

I stood up taller despite the jolt of pain that shot down my back. I towered over her, hiding everything on my face but the cold, hard killer I needed her to see.

“You shouldn’t have been here, Heidi. You understand the predicament that poses for me,si?” I said, my voice devoid of emotion.

“I won’t tell any—” She cut herself off with a flinch. I bet she could hear the insincerity in her words as well as I could.

A sardonic smile tugged at the corners of my lips. “You expect me to believe you’d walk out of here and never mention our little meeting to another living soul?” I asked, then shook my head in answer to my own question. “You’re a liability now, a potential threat to me. And I don’t take kindly to threats.”

Despite her steely façade, a tear slipped from her eye, trickling down her pale cheek.

Her skin wasn’t much darker than the apartment’s white marble floor. She looked like a porcelain doll, with an oval face and big blue eyes that were dark for the most part. Up close, though, I could see a scattering of tiny, pale blue flecks in them. She wore no makeup, and yet, when she blinked and another tear escaped, her long, dark lashes fanned out across her cheeks.

The tear trickled down to the corner of her vivid pink lips, which were shaped like a cupid’s bow, the upper lip a little too plush, just enough to make her the envy of every collagen-filled pair out there. One look at them, and I was fairly certain that nothing would ever look better wrapped around my cock.
