I fired at the same time as Vito, filling the lone straggler with bullets.

His body jerked and jolted with each impact, then collapsed, dead ten times over by the time he hit the ground.

“Fuck, I’m sorry,Signor,” Carmine’s voice crackled in my ear. “I’m sorry; I didn’t see him, I swear.”

Every man on the property was already moving, heading straight for Aurelio. Vito and I grabbed hold of his arms and dragged him inside, laying him out on the living room rug.

My heart was pounding as I stared down at the blood that soaked through his cardigan.

“I don’t know what happened,Signor,”Carmine said as he came out of the surveillance room with Heidi in tow, his hand wrapped tight around her arm, pulling her with him. “I swear I didn’t see him. I—”

“Quiet,” I seethed as Vito dropped down and yanked open Aurelio’s cardigan.

I glanced over Heidi, surprised by the small bubble of relief that came from seeing her uninjured. But the relief didn’t last long.

“The… girl,” the kid had choked out. This had been about her. I’d killed that kid because of her. Aurelio had been shot because of her.

“Bianchi’s just a man you fuck?” I seethed at her. I shook my head. “No goddamned way.”

Bianchi had sent men straight for her. A lot of men. Whatever reason he wanted her, he wanted her bad.

“It doesn’t look good, boss,” Vito said as he ripped open Aurelio’s shirt beneath the cardigan.

There were two bullet wounds to his abdomen, bleeding profusely. This far out, he’d never make it to a hospital in time.

My heart clenched, and the guilt I’d been pressing back surged like a tidal wave.

Because Aurelio was going to die.

Chapter Eight

Heidi

He wasn’t my problem.

The blood leaking from his body and soaking into the Persian rug meant nothing to me.

I recognized the man; it seemed he was no “off-duty police officer”. He’d lied. He was a criminal. He deserved every ounce of his agony.

That’s what I told myself. That’s what I kept telling myself over and over again.

I turned away from the harsh lines of agony written across his face. I tuned out the vague sounds of chaos emanating from the men all around me.

You took an oath, the Ice Queen chastised me in her cool, imperturbable tone.

“I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures that are required…I’d promised.“If it is given me to save a life...”I was a doctor. I raised roadblocks in Death’s way at every opportunity. No matter what I thought of the people He came for.

“Bloody hell,” I cursed under my breath as I yanked my arm out of the stranger’s grip and grabbed the medical kit from the coffee table.

“Get out of my way!” I demanded as I pushed my way closer and dropped down next to the man bleeding on the floor.

I could feel the astonished gazes of the men upon me, their confusion palpable.

Ignoring their incredulous stares, I grabbed a pair of gloves from the kit, but a hand wrapped around my arm from behind. A large hand with long fingers that were just a little callused. My captor’s hand.

“It’s okay,” the man on the floor wheezed. His voice was all but gone, but I could see his lips move clearly. “Let the doctor work.”

The grip on my arm loosened, but his hand remained there, wrapped around my bicep. I turned to look up at him.
