Even when she’d been crushing on Riley, she never in her wildest dreams imagined that life with him would be anywhere near the perfection that it was. She knew that things won’t always be peachy, that they were sure to butt heads in the future, seeing that Riley can be a bit stubborn about things. But she knew that no matter what, they’d always be able to get through it.

No man could look at a woman the way he’d looked at her this morning and not feel for her what she felt for him. She’d felt the wild beating of his heart when he drew her in that last time and had she any doubts before, the way he’d touched her after, the softness in his eyes when he looked at her as they sat across from each other in the his and her tub while they took their morning bath together was all the proof she needed to put those doubts aside.

She rode that high for all of five minutes before she was being called down to the lab by Andy, who it seemed had barely been home before coming back to work this morning. The high completely disappeared, and she sobered up very quickly when she saw what he had waiting for her. “Are you sure about this?” She was looking at the results from the school computer.

“I checked and double-checked, I’m very sure.” What a mess, Celia thought as she turned to leave the room.

CHAPTER 22

Back at her desk Celia sat deep in thought. There’s no law on the books, at least not in this jurisdiction, that prohibits the use of someone else’s email address without their permission, but the fact that it had been used in the process of a crime might change that. She’d have to get with the D.A. to see what they could do about that, but right now, the only question on her mind was why.

Speaking of the D.A., he’d come through with the warrants she’d requested. Pete was just walking through the door, and she started to call out to him not to get too comfortable behind his desk because they were heading out in a few, but her personal phone rang before she could get the words out.

The readout said Riley, and she wondered what she’d forgotten to do before leaving the house that he just had to call her barely more than an hour after she’d left. She answered, trying to hide the playful exasperation in her voice. “Sparks.”

“Detective, I’ve made an appointment for you with the CEO of Spiro and Company in an hour. Let me know if you need to reschedule.”

“Really? That was quick.” She’d been expecting to have to deal with an office drone or someone like that, not the top dog himself.

“Anything for my girl! Listen, I’ll be out in the pasture all day, so if you need me, call the house and have Eileen come out to get me because cell service is hit or miss out there.”

“Sure, and thanks.” She knew better than to ask what she could possibly need him for and just hung up.

“Come on, Pete, we’ve got a busy morning ahead of us.” Celia grabbed her jacket from the back of her chair and headed for the exit with Pete hot on her heels, stuffing his face with his early morning cruller. She was almost tempted by the smell of the freshly baked treat, but her stomach was still full from the breakfast Riley foisted on her before letting her leave the house.

“Where to boss?”

“The D.A. came through with both warrants, and Andy found some cameras in Bridgette’s room that he claims were hooked up to a computer feed. Two guesses as to who owns that computer.”

“Who’s the other warrant for?”

“Misty Swamp. But we’re going to the inn first then I have a meet with the CEO of her place of business. We’ll leave her for last unless she’s at work today. We’ll have to swing by her house.”

Celia didn’t mention the other thing just yet since she wasn’t sure what tact the D.A. was going to take. Maybe social services would have to be involved.

Dale West had been jittery all morning. In fact, his nerves had started bothering him since the night before when he saw the cop going into the room where Bridgette had been murdered. He’d lain awake all night expecting a knock on the door that didn’t come, and if that wasn’t enough, his wife has been on his case since she opened her eyes this morning.

By the time he saw the two cops walking through the door to the front desk, he was ready to expire. It was a fine time to come to his senses, but he was wishing like heck that he’d not crossed the line. Sure the girl had been a stunner, and he’d figured that since he wasn’t touching her, just getting his rocks off watching her undress, there was no harm. Now he was sure he was going to be accused of murder when all he’d done was be a pervert.
