“You are insane. I can’t let you do this. Her father is a federal agent.”

As I scan my eyes over the closest train station to the Davis residence, I reply to my best friend’s warning. “I’m not doing this for him. I am doing it for her.” When she groans, I say, “She’s so lost, Amelia. She doesn’t know who she is.” My last sentence gets her over the fence. “I don’t know who I am either.”

“Hen—”

“Please,” I beg. “I’ll never ask you for anything ever again if you will help me do this.”

Her silence kills me.

It literally shreds me to pieces.

Then it is a godsend. “Okay. I’ll help you.” It wouldn’t be Amelia if she didn’t add on a list of demands for her services. “But since you’re adamant our search must be reserved to the nanny agency, I’ll be anticipating a ton of visual prompts to be coming my way. A girl can’t be expected to work for free…”

She continues jabbering until Ms. Seabourn is identified and returned to the West Coast, and I’ve purchased a cell phone capable of taking ungrainy images.

The rest of our story is history.
