What is he talking about?

“You do not understand now. Yet, in the future, you will. We are destined to meet today.”

“Old Onork, stop spouting nonsense. And no need to heal this foreigner if we are just going to let him go,” the shorter one said. I noticed everyone has gone quiet looking at us.

“The hiscat will stay,” the leader said.

“No!” I stated at the same time the hiscat hissed and started growling again. “This hiscat belongs to me.”

They were about to object when the old man said, “Where you will go will be dangerous to the hiscat.”

He just healed me so I’m trying not to be angry at him. The hiscat also looked at him feeling betrayed.

“No,” he seemed to addressed both me and the hiscat. “I will keep it for safekeeping. After you mission, you will find me in the Pranuksa -“

“- Now we have to kill him!” Said someone in the crowd.

“Quiet!” I know the old man’s voice was low but the protests stopped. Now I see, this old man might be the leader of this group, not the bigger one in front of me.

“The young one will go on a mission. We cannot help. The hiscat knows this. It will endanger this one’s life rather than protect the young one. The hiscat will stay.”

“What mission?” I asked.

“Zirc found the relic?”

I stiffened. Who are these people? Why do they know about the relic?

The leader spoke up. “By now, almost everyone knows that Zirc was sent to find a relic. Some gangs are finding him to get it. The rest wants to kill him. If he has the relic, there is a chance the Elders will find a way to help him.” He looked at the shorter man and they both nod their head. “What we are going to tell you, you must share with Zirc and his tribe’s alpha, Roqs only.”

I nod. Here’s hoping I did not betray Zirc just now.

“The manasty who kidnaped you.” I remember the man who looked like Ist’s brother. He doesn’t have kind eyes like his brother though. If it was him with me in that cave, I wouldn’t be here sitting listening to this.

“He is not working for any gang. He works for anyone with the right amount of money. He killed one of our members,” I saw the pain on his old almost faded blue eyes. I felt guilty. These people helped me escape. “He is that desperate. We can’t protect you.”

Some members grumbled but many hummed their agreement with the leader. “You will have to leave.” He paused. “Again. Without the hiscat.”

The hiscat hissed loudly but he did not protest when the old man brushed his gnarly hands on his body.

He is right. I can’t rely on these people. I need to get back to Zirc. I will remember what he said. Pranuksa. Zirc and Roqs would know the place. And maybe these people. At first glance, I think they are slaves because of how they smell and their clothing. But I can see the glint in their eyes. Like they are on a mission and all of these is a facade. Working those docks is just a cover for them.

As if reading my mind, the old man said, “One of us will take you to Roqs.”

“No!” The beefy guy exclaimed. “Not him.”

“Scarface!” I exclaimed and found myself upright.

“Typical” the lean man said.

“He saved me,” I pointed out. I tried to go near him but the beefy guy held on tight to him. He kept on glaring at the Scarface who was just looking at the old man.

“Scarface, huh? That seems to describe you accurately.” I heard the old man said. He was helped by a younger manasty and stood up beside me.

Scarface’s wounds seemed to be more raw than the first time I saw him. “Good,” the old man walked towards Scarface. “As you do not tell us your name, that is what we will call you from now on.”

I can see the veins on Scarface’s head throbbed. Even if he was taller than beefy guy and the leader, he seemed smaller when the latter quietly observed him.

Lean man stepped nearer. “He just joined us less than a month, Leader. He needs to earn his place here.” Meaning, they don’t trust him.
