Fuck, that almost made me flinch. He sounded just like Sophia, and the fact that it was the first thing they both thought of made me consider hooking them up so they could ruin the world together.

"No, it's just my assignment. But if we are going to be friends, I thought it'd be better to tell you."

He leaned back and smirked, looking annoyed and frustrated. Biting his lip, he glanced around at everyone walking by the coffee shop on the boardwalk. After a few seconds, he huffed again and looked at me.

"Then I guess I will see you there."

"What?" Tripp told me he didn't know anything about Hunter being there.

"Did you think because your lover boy wouldn't help me out I didn't have a way in? I tried giving Tripp the credit, but he threw it away."

Standing up, he leaned down and placed a kiss on my cheek before whispering in my ear. "See you on the field, honey. It'll be nice having you watch me practice. Like old times."

Then he was gone, and I wasn't sure how I felt. Was he really the victim in all this? Why did he always make me question everything?

Looking down at my phone, I remembered the picture he threatened Tripp with. He may not have taken that intending to blackmail anyone, but he was, and that would never be okay.

ChapterTwenty-Five

Tripp

"You shouldn't have done that!" Cruz yelled, still not feeling quite himself. His disappearing act had to be handled, though, and he had to come in for our pre-camp team meetings.

"I think I can do whatever the fuck I want," Rhys bit back at him.

Cruz ran a hand through his hair and turned around, then realizing I was standing there, he froze. Looking back at Rhys, he snarled and nodded his head. "Tell him what you can do, then. I'm not staying here, I'm going home."

"Yeah, you're not ready to be here," Rhys yelled as Cruz walked toward me. "Someone will be by to check on you later."

"Fuck off," Cruz yelled with his back to Rhys. When he got closer to me, he added in a normal tone, "Ask him what he did. Then tell Coach I said I'm not ready."

"What the—" Before I could even think of what my question was going to be, Cruz was headed down the long hall that attached our locker room to the player parking lot. I was jealous that he could confidently leave, knowing Coach wouldn't care because he was Cruz Martin.

Turning to Rhys, I lifted my arms in the air and sighed. "What the hell is going on?"

"Someone asked me for a favor and I obliged. Someone I don't like. But after he reminded me that I owed him one, I did it."

"Why is that Cruz's business?"

"I have no idea," he threw his hands in the air and sat at his locker. Cruz's locker was between mine and Rhys', so we were close enough to keep talking while we changed. "I guess it's because he creeps the girls out on the team, and Cruz is protective of Erin, but doesn't he think I considered Ash as well? I almost killed that guy once just for looking at her too long. I'm the one that invented hating him. But I couldn't exactly say no when he reminded me of—"

"Are you talking about Hunter Ward?" I stood up, the pieces connecting. "What the fuck did you do?"

"He asked for an invite to camp since he's taking time off from the women's team at the college. I asked Ash what I should do, and she didn't care. Hell, anything that keeps him away from her is a good thing. Plus, this way, I can feel him out and decide how much I hate him."

"You hate him. Cruz hates him. I hate him. Why the fuck would you invite him?"

"What the fuck does it matter to you?"

Shit, I couldn't tell him. He was our captain and would probably bench me himself if he knew what I had gotten myself wrapped up in with Hunter. Cruz knew most of it because I told him, but even he didn't know the whole story.

"You know what, never mind."

"Dude, tell me! If there is something I need to know, then tell me."

"Just not sure what he could have done that makes you feel like you owe him one."

"He called me when Ash and Erin got drunk. He kept an eye on them until I could get there. Then he didn't tell Colin that Ash and I were seeing each other. As much as I hate him, he showed me he wasn't a complete jackass. Plus, like I said, I'd rather have him here than at the college with the girls."
