He opened the door and started to close it behind him before opening it again and looking at me with a sincere and meaningful gaze. "Also, thank you, man. Offering to help me will make everything so much easier. I'm glad we reconnected."

Again, I nodded but had no idea what he was talking about. All I needed him to do was leave, and once he said the last word, he shut the door and was gone.

Locking my door first, I went to my shower and turned it as hot as possible. There was also another showerhead on the other side of the shower, and once I was in, I turned that one on, too. Then I stood in the middle of the streams and let the water soothe every ache in my body.

Only when I was clean and had my teeth brushed did I pause.

Help with what?

What the fuck was I helping Hunter with? It was easy to agree when I wanted him gone, but now that my head was clearing up, I needed to know what the hell he meant.

I grabbed my phone and searched my texts and contacts but couldn't find his number. So I couldn't ask him what the hell he meant. He told me he had mine, though, and unless he called, I didn't need to worry about it.

What I knew, though, was that whatever I agreed to do was probably about soccer, and I wasn't going to like it very much.

"Fuck Tay, I'm so sorry," Hunter moaned into my ear. His lips skimmed my neck, kissing his way to my lips. It was the most affection he had given me in a while.

"I deserve better," I cried, only without the anger I initially practiced in the shower before he got to my apartment. After all, the skimming of his lips was doing something to me, making me forgive quicker than I should have. Knowing it was a ploy to calm me down still didn't make me back away from his touch, though.

When his text came in at noon, telling me he got caught up with an old friend, I started to write him back and tell him to leave me alone for good. But, like always, I hit delete instead of sending. He promised to be at my apartment after I got off work, but it was almost eight before he arrived.

The dinner I had cooked for us was cold, and I wanted to crawl into bed already. Work was hard, my heart was breaking, and my mind was twisted.

"Are you staying the night?"

"I can't," he pouted. "I'm having an early lunch with one of the advisors at the college."

"And you can't get up before lunch and go home? I mean, I have to get up at seven for work and can wake you up."

"It's across town, Tay. You know how it is."

Tears pooled in my eyes again, and I finally backed away from his hold. He looked worried, and he should have, because I was breaking right in front of him, and he was in danger of getting cut.

"Just go," I whispered, feeling a moment of strength wash over me.

"Tay," he took a step forward. "Don't do this. We're still new, and I'm still getting my wits about me trying to get where I need to be. You know that. You told me you supported that."

"We aren't new, Hunter!" I held my hands up, not wanting him to touch me while I felt so weak. "We are getting a second chance. Touching me isn't new, being intimate with me isn't new. But ever since you got back to Miami, you've barely kissed me. The one time you stayed the night, you fell asleep while I was in the shower, and you left before I even woke up. Why? What's the problem? Did you really want to try again with me?"

"Yes… Nothing!" he yelled back, getting frustrated. "I just know I fucked up before, and want to get it right this time."

"What a cop-out. You didn't fuck up, you left! And I understood why! It hurt, but you had to pursue your dreams. Now you're back and you called me, remember?"

"Because I wanted to fix us."

"There was nothing to fix. All you had to do was come back and love me the way you did when we were in college. That was the Hunter I expected to get back."

"Give me some time. It's important to me to have my life together, not only for me but for us. Just give me more time."

"Go then," I held my hand toward the door. "Go take your time."

"Fuck, don't do this."

"Maybe in a few weeks, we will have clearer heads."
